Popular Social Party
The Popular Social Party (Greek: Λαϊκό Κοινωνικό Κόμμα) was a Greek political party that formed after a split from the People's Party. It was founded in January 1956 by Stefanos Stefanopoulos. The Popular Social Party participated in the elections of 1956 but failed to enter the parliament. In the elections of 1958 it participated with other right-wing parties in the Union of Populars and elected two MPs. Political program Its main political program, as it was claimed, was social and economic justice. The party suggested social reforms and a new organization of the Greek economy. Stefanos Stefanopoulos
Stefanos Stefanopoulos ( el, Στέφανος Στεφανόπουλος, 3 July 1898 – 4 October 1982) was a Greek politician, and served as Prime Minister of Greece from 1965 to 1966. Stefanopoulos was born in Pyrgos, Elis. He was a moderate conservative, and served as a cabinet member during Alexandros Papagos' government. He even served as acting Prime Minister for a day after the latter's death on 4 October 1955. On 17 September 1965, he became Prime Minister of Greece during the period of the "Apostasia", supported by conservatives and defecting members of the Centre Union party. Unable to gain a parliamentary vote of confidence, his government fell on 22 December 1966. The People's Party or Populist Party () was a conservative and pro-monarchist Greek political party founded by Dimitrios Gounaris, the main political rival of Eleftherios Venizelos and his Liberal Party. The party existed from 1920 until 1958. History Gounaris founded the party out of the Nationalist Party in October 1920, after his return from exile in Corsica. Gounaris and his parliamentary candidates campaigned for the withdrawal of the Hellenic Army from Asia Minor, which it occupied under the terms of the Treaty of Sèvres in the aftermath of World War I. The party was triumphant in the 1920 Greek general election and formed successive governments under Gounaris, Nikolaos Stratos and Petros Protopapadakis.
