''Popstars'' is an international reality television franchise aimed to find new singing talent. Serving as a precursor to the ''Idol'' franchise, ''Popstars'' first began in New Zealand in 1999 when producer Jonathan Dowling formed the girl group TrueBliss. Despite all shows in the ''Popstars'' franchise having been off air in recent years, it remains one of the most successful TV show formats of all time with the format being sold to more than 50 countries, and producing groups such as Girls Aloud that had success on the UK charts for the next ten years after winning. The show was the inspiration for Simon Fuller's ''Idols'' franchise. Screentime is an Australian television production company, which develops and produces scripted and unscripted television programs in Australia and New Zealand. The company has produced numerous popular series including ''Popstars'', the ''Underbelly'' format, '' RBT'' and '' Janet King''. In 2012, French company Banijay Group acquired a majority stake in Screentime. History The company was formed by Bob Campbell and Des Monaghan with Capital Investment Group in 1996. Screentime's first production was New Zealand talk show ''5.30 with Jude'' on TV One which ran for three seasons. Popstars (Dutch TV Series)
Popstars was a singing competition series in the Netherlands. The first season started on 22 August 2008. A second season was aired for 2009-2010 and third season aired in 2010-2011. The winners in season 1 were RED! made up of the three finalist winners Brandi Russell, Steffie Zoontjes and Deon Leon. Wesley Klein won in season 2 and Dean Saunders in season 3. The precursor of these shows was the Dutch version of ''Popstars: The Rivals'' broadcast on RTL 4 in 2004 hosted by Beau van Erven Dorens. The series was won by the boy band Men2B (male category) and girl band Raffish (female category). Both disbanded in 2006. Kayne Taylor
Kayne Taylor is a pop music singer from Melbourne, Victoria who won the 2004 Australian series of ''Popstars Live''. Taylor started singing in 1994 and can also play bass and guitar. ''Popstars Live'' Taylor was working for Australia Post when a friend dared him to audition. He did so, becoming a finalist and then the winner. On ''Popstars Live: The Finalists'', Taylor covered "Jealous Guy", first performed by John Lennon and later an Australian number one hit for Roxy Music in 1981. Taylor's show-stopping performance of the INXS song "Never Tear Us Apart" was considered by many to be his finest moment. Other standouts included his unique rendition of "It's Raining Men", as well as the Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan duet "Especially for You", which was performed, strangely, as a solo. ''Popstars Live'' was an Australian music talent show television program similar to '' Australian Idol'' that aired on the Seven Network in early 2004. It was an evolution of the original ''Popstars'' TV show which aired between 2000 and 2002 on Seven. The show spawned a single and album that made the ARIA charts in April that year. ''Popstars Live'' premiered on the Seven Network in February 2004. It was scheduled to run for 16 weeks and was originally slated to air on Sunday and Wednesday nights. Scott Cain (born 2 April 1981) is an Australian singer and TV presenter. In 2002 he won the third Australian ''Popstars'' TV talent competition. His debut solo album, ''Controlled Folly'' (October 2002), peaked in the ARIA Charts, ARIA Albums Chart top 50. Its lead single, "I'm Moving On (Scott Cain song), I'm Moving On" (May 2002), reached number one on the related ARIA Singles Chart. While competing on ''Popstars'', the Final 7 contestants released a compilation single with each providing a cover version of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition (song), Superstition", which peaked at number seven. Scandal'us (or Scandal'Us) were the winners of the Australian ''Popstars 2'' in 2001 (successors of Bardot, the winners of the first Australian ''Popstars'' in 2000). They won an ARIA chart award for their No. 1 debut single " Me, Myself & I". Their second and final single, " Make Me Crazy", only reached No. 30. Mambrú
Mambrú was a male pop group from Buenos Aires, Argentina. They saw both local and international success from 2002 until 2005 when they disbanded.
