Pop American Style
''Pop American Style'' is a double disc indie pop compilation album, released in 1996 by March Records and subtitled, "40 Original Artists, 40 Original Hits". The label said that "the idea behind the project was to show off most of the deserving acts who created music from their bedrooms, dormrooms, and garages." A follow-up album, ''Moshi Moshi: Pop International Style'', followed in 1999. Critical reception AllMusic's Stephen Cramer said it "set the benchmark for indie pop and twee pop compilations" and that it "began a trend of independently released pop in the late '90s." AllMusic's Tim Sendra made it a staff pick, saying that "Not all of he songs He or HE may refer to: Language * He (pronoun), an English pronoun * He (kana), the romanization of the Japanese kana へ * He (letter), the fifth letter of many Semitic alphabets * He (Cyrillic), a letter of the Cyrillic script called ''He'' in ...are hits, but enough are that the combined slugging percentage is hall of fame wort ... Indie Pop
Indie pop (also typeset as indie-pop or indiepop) is a music genre and subculture that combines guitar pop with DIY ethic in opposition to the style and tone of mainstream pop music. It originated from British post-punk in the late 1970s and subsequently generated a thriving fanzine, Independent record label, label, and club and gig circuit. Compared to its counterpart, indie rock, the genre is more melodic, less abrasive, and relatively angst-free. In later years, the definition of ''indie pop'' has bifurcated to also mean bands from unrelated DIY scenes/movements with pop leanings. Subgenres include chamber pop and twee pop. Development and characteristics Origins and etymology Both ''indie'' and ''indie pop'' had originally referred to the same thing during the late 1970s. Inspired more by punk rock's DIY ethos than its style, guitar bands were formed on the then-novel premise that one could record and release their own music instead of having to procure a record contra ... Flowchart was an American band from Philadelphia. The group originally consisted of Sean O'Neal, Craig Bottel, and Brodie Budd in 1994. Their first album, ''Multi-Personality Tabletop Vacation'', was released in 1995 on Carrot Top Records, garnering negative reviews from critics who found their music to be too similar to the group Stereolab. They followed the album with several EPs that moved away from the Stereolab-styled sound. In 1997, O'Neal met Erin Anderson at a DJ gig. This meeting led to the duo collaborating on music and eventually having Anderson join Flowchart while Bottel and Budd left the group. Their second album, ''Cumulus Mood Twang'', received positive reviews from Allmusic, Pitchfork Media, and ''CMJ'', as well as having the group placed on URB's "Next 100" list. The following releases from Flowchart included ''Commercial'' in 1999 and ''Broken and Blue'' in 2003, where the group began to have more of an experimental techno and house music sound. Bunnygrunt
Bunnygrunt are an American indie pop band from St. Louis, Missouri composed of guitarist/vocalist Matt Harnish and drummer Karen Ried. History 1993–1998 The band formed in early 1993, with Wally Schwartz on bass. Their first release, the "Criminal Boy" 7", came in the same year, on Silly Moo Records. In short order Rene Dullum took over the duties on bass. They continued to release 7"s and EPs, drawing attention for this and for their rapid release schedule, until they recorded their debut full-length in 1995, titled ''Action Pants!'', released on No Life Records. This release was not without its problems. Dullum was fired from the band before the album was released, taking her songs with her. This meant that the album's running time was rather short – now being only 8 songs long, and around 20 minutes in length (partly due to the 10-minute-long "Open Wide and Say Oblina", the album's closer). The band then recruited bassist Jen Wolfe, and continued to release 7"s, including ' ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
