Pool-building Game
A pool-building game is a game where the players build a pool of items (e.g. cards or dice) throughout the game. Some or all of the items in their pool have a resource which allows other items to be purchased, from a set of items that are not in the players pool. These games have frequent recycling methods to allow the purchased items to be drawn and played later in the game. Pool item types While there are several different types of items used in the pool, like dice or chips, the pool building genre started with Dominion, where players purchase cards from a common area and they get reshuffled into their decks. When the pool item is a card, the type of game is called a deck-building game. Examples * Deck-building: Dominion The term ''Dominion'' is used to refer to one of several self-governing nations of the British Empire. "Dominion status" was first accorded to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Newfoundland, South Africa, and the Irish Free State at the 1926 ... * Ba ...

Dominion (card Game)
''Dominion'' is a card game created by Donald X. Vaccarino and published by Rio Grande Games. It was the first deck-building game, and inspired a genre of games building on its central mechanic. Each player begins with a small deck of cards, which they improve by purchasing cards from a common supply that varies from game to game. Cards can help the player's deck function, impede their opponents, or provide victory points. As of December 2022, fifteen expansions to the original ''Dominion'' have been released. The game has a medieval theme with card names referencing pre-industrial, monarchical, and feudal social structures. Comparisons about the game's feel are often drawn with collectible card games such as '' Magic: The Gathering''. Vaccarino, however, denies that ''Magic'' was the inspiration. When ''Dominion'' was released at the Spiel game fair in 2008, it was voted "best game of the fair" by the ''Fairplay'' polls. The next year it won the Spiel des Jahres and ...

Deck-building Game
A deck-building game is a card game or board game where construction of a deck is a main element of gameplay. Deck-building games are similar to collectible card games (CCGs) in that each player has their own deck. However, unlike CCGs, the cards are not sold in randomized packs, and the majority of the deck is built during the game, instead of before the game. Mechanics In most deck-building games, each player starts with a small deck of weak cards. Each turn, they draw some cards from their deck and play them, which gives various effects including being able to buy some more cards from a central market, thereby building their deck. Other effects include being able to play more actions, attacking other players, and removing unwanted cards from the player’s deck. Typically, the cards also provide the in-game currency that allows players to buy more cards. As players buy more cards, their decks gradually become more powerful. When the player runs out of cards to draw, they shuf ...

Quarriors! is a pool-building game made by WizKids. In it Players represent a titular mystical warrior, and players roll dice which gives them Quiddity (an in-game currency) which allows them to purchase additional Spell Dice or Creature Dice, which can then be used to attack the opponent. Quarriors! was released in 2011, and was a nominee for Dice Tower game of the year, Best family game, and most innovative game of the year. Gameplay The games have a lot of variability, in that the dice that are available to purchase each game change, so the way they interact can cause a great variety of changes in the game.
