Pony, Montana
Pony is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in northeastern Madison County, Montana, United States on the eastern edge of the Tobacco Root Mountains. It includes the Pony Historic District, a historic district with 95 contributing buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. with The town gained its name from the nickname of one of its early miners, Tecumseth Smith, a small man nicknamed "Pony" because of his diminutive size. Settled in the 1860s, in the late nineteenth century, Pony was a prosperous gold-mining community with at least 5,000 residents. Mining operations declined in the early 20th century and all were closed by 1922. A number of historic buildings from Pony's boom era remain in the old town today. Major buildings are managed, voluntarily, by The Pony Homecoming Club, a non-profit organization that maintains the town's public spaces. Montana Highway 283 passes through town. Karl Ohs
Karl Ohs (November 18, 1946 – November 25, 2007) was the 28th Lieutenant Governor of the state of Montana serving under Judy Martz. Background Karl Ohs was born in Malta, Montana, the son of a Swedish immigrant. He was a Montana rancher and farmer prior entering politics. He attended Montana State College (Later Montana State University) where he wrestled for the Fighting Bobcats and was a two time Big Sky Conference Champion. In 1969, Ohs left his studies in agricultural economics at Montana State University to help the family move to a new ranch in Pony, Montana in a Tobacco Root Mountain valley outside Harrison in Madison County. Ohs was only a few credits short of graduation when he left Montana State. Harrison is a census-designated place (CDP) in Madison County, Montana, United States. The population was 137 at the 2010 census, down from 162 in 2000. The town began as Ferguson, a stage stop on the road to Virginia City. The Northern Pacific Railroad constructed a branch line in 1889. Eventually the town was called Harrison after an early settler, Henry C. Harrison. Geography Harrison is located at (45.702507, -111.785376). U.S. Route 287 passes through town. Tobacco Root Mountains
The Tobacco Root Mountains lie in the northern Rocky Mountains, between the Jefferson and Madison Rivers in southwest Montana. The highest peak is Hollowtop at . The range contains 43 peaks rising to elevations greater than 10,000 feet (3048 m). Much of the central part of the range is within the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, although many, mostly small patented mining claims exist within the forest boundary. The range saw significant gold mining, especially during the 1880s to 1930s. The high peaks have been extensively glaciated, and most of the larger stream valleys held valley glaciers during the ice age.
