Pontarfynach
Devil's Bridge ( cy, Pontarfynach, lit. "The bridge on the Mynach") is a village and community in Ceredigion, Wales. Above the River Mynach on the edge of the village is the unusual road bridge from which the village gets its English name. The village is on the A4120 road, about east of Aberystwyth. The population of Pontarfynach community at the 2011 census was 455. The mid-2016 estimate suggests that the population had dropped slightly to 429. History The village is best known for the bridge that spans the Afon Mynach, a tributary of the Rheidol. The bridge is unique in that three separate bridges are coexistent, each one built upon the previous bridge. The previous structures were not demolished. Vale Of Rheidol Railway
The Vale of Rheidol Railway ( cy, Rheilffordd Cwm Rheidol) is a narrow gauge heritage railway in Ceredigion, Wales, between Aberystwyth and Devil's Bridge; a journey of . It opened in 1902, and from the withdrawal of main line steam on British Rail in 1968 until privatisation in 1989, it was the sole steam-operated line on the 1948 nationalised British Rail network. It was one of the first parts of British Rail to be privatised. Afon Mynach
The Afon Mynach ( en, River Mynach) is a small river in Ceredigion, Wales. Its source is at the meeting of two smaller rivers, the Nant Rhuddnant and the Afon Merin. Both of these streams have their sources in lakes high on the Cambrian Mountains, the Afon Merin flows from Llynoedd Ieuan, and the Nant Rhuddnant from Llyn Rhuddnant. The Afon Mynach is notable for the famous Mynach Falls in the village of Devil's Bridge (Pontarfynach), where the river plunges 90 metres into the gorge of the River Rheidol. Devil's Bridge Railway Station
Devil's Bridge railway station is a railway station serving Devil's Bridge in Ceredigion in Mid-Wales. It is the eastern terminus of the preserved Vale of Rheidol Railway. Facilities The station has two platforms although one has been disused for many years. Following developments during 2012 and 2013, funded by the European Union, there is now a raised platform, improving access on and off carriages. River Rheidol
The Afon Rheidol is a river in Ceredigion, Wales, in length. The source is Plynlimon. Receiving an average annual rainfall of , Plynlimon is also the source of both the Wye and the Severn. Geography and geology The Rheidol rises in the headwaters of the Nant-y-moch Reservoir on the western flanks of Plynlimon, near the sources of the Wye and Severn. After flowing south to Ponterwyd on the increasingly deep valley, then southwest through Welsh Oak ancient woodland, it veers westwards to its confluence with the Afon Mynach, at Devil's Bridge, Ceredigion ( cy, Pontarfynach, lit. Thomas Johnes
Thomas Johnes FRS (1 September 1748 – 23 April 1816) was a Member of Parliament, landscape architect, farmer, printer, writer and social benefactor. He is best known for his development of the Hafod Estate in Wales. Johnes was born in Ludlow, Shropshire, England. Upon moving from his family home at Croft Castle to an isolated area near Cwmystwyth, in Ceredigion, Wales, Johnes began his life works by building a church for the local tenants, a school, and magnificent gardens, walks and bridges. He undertook experiments in sheep and cattle breeding together with the growing of new crops and a thriving dairy was established. Trees were planted in great quantities on land considered unsuitable for crops; Johnes obtained the Royal Society of Arts medal five times for planting trees. George Borrow
George Henry Borrow (5 July 1803 – 26 July 1881) was an English writer of novels and of travel based on personal experiences in Europe. His travels gave him a close affinity with the Romani people of Europe, who figure strongly in his work. His best-known books are '' The Bible in Spain'' and the novels '' Lavengro'' and '' The Romany Rye'', set in his time with the English ''Romanichal'' (Gypsies).
