''Ponerorchis kinoshitae'' is a species of flowering plant in the family Orchidaceae, native to the south Kuril Islands and northern Japan ( Hokkaido, north Honshu). Taxonomy The species was first described in 1903 by Tomitaro Makino as ''Gymnadenia keiskei'' var. ''kinoshitae''. In 1909, he raised it to a full species as ''Gymnadenia kinoshitae''. It was later transferred to other genera, including '' Orchis'' and '' Amitostigma''. The World Checklist of Selected Plant Families (usually abbreviated to WCSP) is an "international collaborative programme that provides the latest peer reviewed and published opinions on the accepted scientific names and synonyms of selected plant families." Maintained by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, it is available online, allowing searches for the names of families, genera and species, as well as the ability to create checklists. In biological taxonomy, circumscription is the content of a taxon, that is, the delimitation of which subordinate taxa are parts of that taxon. If we determine that species X, Y, and Z belong in Genus A, and species T, U, V, and W belong in Genus B, those are our circumscriptions of those two genera. Another systematist might determine that T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z all belong in genus A. In cladistics for a group of organisms, monophyly is the condition of being a clade—that is, a group of taxa composed only of a common ancestor (or more precisely an ancestral population) and all of its lineal descendants. It is native to temperate Eurasia, from Poland to Japan, to the north of the Indian subcontinent and to northern Indochina.
