''Pompilus'' is a genus of spider wasps in the family Pompilidae, the members of which prey on spiders. There are seven species recognised in ''Pompilus sensu stricto''. It is the type genus of the family Pompilidae and the subfamily Pompilinae. Biology ''Pompilus ''wasps are fossorial, stocking short burrows in sand with single spiders of various families upon which they lay a single egg. Distribution The members of ''Pompilus'' are widely distributed throughout the Old World, in both temperate and tropical regions, but with the greatest diversity in Africa. The black ruff (''Centrolophus niger'') is a medusafish, the only member of the genus ''Centrolophus''. It is a bathypelagic fish found in all tropical and temperate oceans at depths of . The pilot fish (''Naucrates ductor'') is a carnivorous fish of the trevally, or jackfish family, Carangidae. It is widely distributed and lives in warm or tropical open seas. Description The pilot fish congregates around sharks, rays, and sea turtles, where it eats ectoparasites on, and leftovers around the host species; younger pilot fish are usually associated with jellyfish and drifting seaweeds.
