''Pompeii'' is an EP by Beirut, released in 2007. It features only the work of Zach Condon and pre-dates the ''Gulag Orkestar'' debut album. While initially only available exclusively through eMusic and Rough Trade Digital, it later could be found on iTunes and Amazon. The Amazon version included a third song called "Monna Pomona". The album cover features Zach Condon (on the left) and his younger brother Ross Condon (on the right). Beirut (band)
Beirut is an American band that was originally the solo musical project of Zach Condon. Beirut's music combines elements of indie rock and world music. The band's first performance with the full brass section was in New York, in May 2006, in support of their debut album ''Gulag Orkestar'', but performed their first show with Condon, Petree, and Collins at the College of Santa Fe earlier that year. Condon named the band after Lebanon's capital, because of the city's history of conflict and as a place where cultures collide. Beirut performed in Lebanon for the first time in 2014, at the Byblos International Festival. History Early years Zach Condon was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico on February 13, 1986. Indie Folk
Indie folk is a music genre that arose in the 1990s among musicians from indie rock scenes influenced by folk music. ''Lon Gisland'' is an EP by Beirut, released on CD by Ba Da Bing! Records in January 2007 and on single-sided 12" LP by Chouette Records. It is a follow-up to the critically acclaimed ''Gulag Orkestar'' and the first album performed by the full band, which came together after ''Gulag Orkestar''s release. ''Lon Gisland'' includes a reworked version of "Scenic World", from Beirut's previous album. The EP’s title does not refer to a person named Lon Gisland, but is instead a play on the place-name “Long Island.” Reception Pitchfork Media's Brandon Stosuy gave ''Lon Gisland'' a positive review, calling Condon's decision to play with a full band a "smart move". Stosuy ended his review by writing: "It seems Condon's getting all this-- by embracing the developments, he's started to go beyond chewing the scenery to, well, actually living in it". ''Elephant Gun'' is an EP by Beirut, released in 2007. The title track was originally released on ''Lon Gisland''. Gulag Orkestar
''Gulag Orkestar'' is the debut album of Beirut. It was recorded in 2005 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Gulag was a Soviet government agency administering criminal justice, while ''orkestar'' is the Croatian word for "orchestra". It is written in the booklet that the front and back photos were found in a library in Leipzig, torn out of a book. The original photographer was unknown to the creators of the album while it was recorded, but has since been discovered to be Sergey Chilikov. Reception The album has received great critical acclaim and was later re-released to include the ''Lon Gisland'' EP. As of 2009, sales in the United States have exceeded 79,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Rough Trade Records
Rough Trade Records is an independent record label based in London, England. It was formed in 1976 by Geoff Travis who had opened a record store off Ladbroke Grove. Having successfully promoted and sold records by punk rock and early post-punk and indie pop bands such as the Normal and Desperate Bicycles, Travis began to manage acts and distribute bands such as Scritti Politti and began the label, which was informed by left-wing politics and structured as a co-operative. Soon after, Rough Trade also set up a distribution arm that serviced independent retail outlets across Britain, a network that became known as the Cartel. In 1983, Rough Trade signed the Smiths.
