HMS ''Polyanthus'' was a of the Royal Navy. She was launched on 30 November 1940 from Leith Docks on the Firth of Forth, at an estimated cost of £55,000. ''Polyanthus'' was sunk by the using new German weapons technology on 20 September 1943 about 1,000 miles southwest of Reykjavík during convoy escort duty in the Battle of the North Atlantic. GWR 4100 Class
The GWR 4100 Class was a class of steam locomotives in the Great Western Railway (GWR) of the United Kingdom. The Badminton class express passenger 4-4-0 steam locomotives were introduced in 1897 as a development from the earlier GWR 3252 Class, Duke class. The name Badminton was chosen after the Duke of Beaufort's Badminton House, Badminton estate, through which the GWR was building South Wales Main Line, a new line to South Wales at the time. Further modifications to the design resulted in the Atbara Class entering service in 1900, the names for these locomotives generally being taken from contemporary military engagements or senior army commanders. Later engines were named after cities of the British Empire. The final batch of locomotives were named after varieties of garden plant and in consequence were known as the Flower Class. ''Primula'' × ''polyantha'', the polyanthus primrose or false oxlip, is a naturally occurring hybrid species of flowering plant in the family Primulaceae. It is the result of crosses between ''Primula veris'' (common cowslip) and '' Primula vulgaris'' (common primrose). It is native to Europe, found where the parent species' ranges overlap, and many artificial hybrid cultivars have also been created for the garden trade. Naturallyoccurring individuals (the false oxlips) tend to have yellow flowers, while a wide range of flower colors has been developed in the cultivars (the polyanthus primroses) over the centuries. 1836 Grand Liverpool Steeplechase
The 1836 Grand Liverpool Steeplechase was the first of three unofficial annual precursors of a steeplechase which later became known as the Grand National. The steeplechase was held at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool, England on 29 February 1836 and attracted a field of ten runners. The winning horse was The Duke, ridden by Captain Martin Becher in the violet with white sleeves and cap colours of Mr Sirdefield, the landlord of the ''George Inn'' in Great Crosby and was trained privately. The race was won in a time of 20 minutes 10 seconds, over twice the present course record. The race was a selling race and its status as an official Grand National was revoked some time between 1862 and 1873. Pleioblastus
''Pleioblastus'' is an East Asian genus of monopodial bamboos in the grass family Poaceae. They are native to China and Japan, and naturalized in scattered places in Korea, Europe, New Zealand, and the Western Hemisphere. The plant spreads by vigorous underground rhizomes which run along just beneath the soil surface, producing plantlets at the nodes. These can be used to propagate new plants, but if not removed they can become invasive. The species ''Pleioblastus variegatus'' (green and cream stripes), and ''P. viridistriatus'' (green and yellow stripes) have gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
