Polonia Gdańsk (''Polonia being the Latin name for "Poland"'') is a name that has been used by some sports teams in Gdańsk, Poland. Former uses *SKS Stoczniowiec Gdańsk, Polish football team, formed in 1945. Known as "Polonia Gdańsk" during the 1960s–1970, and 1992–2020. *Stoczniowiec Gdańsk, Polish ice hockey team, formed in 1953. Known as "Polonia Gdańsk" from 1953 to 1970. *Lechia-Polonia Gdańsk, Polish football team, formed in 1998, dissolved in 2002. SKS Stoczniowiec Gdańsk is a football club based in Gdańsk, Poland. It spent a large part of its history as Polonia Gdańsk. The club was founded in 1945 and currently plays in the Gdańsk regional divisions. It is best known for its period of success in the 1970s which saw the club play in the Polish cup semifinal and almost achieve promotion to the top flight of Polish football, and for a merger with Lechia Gdańsk creating the Lechia-Polonia Gdańsk team which played between 1998-2002. History The club was founded on 27 September 1945 as KS Nit Gdańsk, and in several seasons were known as Stal Gdańsk. In the early years the team played in the lower regional divisions of Polish football. During the 1960s the team were playing in the third tier, often fighting for promotion. Stoczniowiec Gdańsk is an ice hockey team based in Gdańsk, Poland. The team currently plays in the 1. Liga, but has formerly spent 30 seasons playing in the Polska Hokej Liga, the top-level ice hockey league in Poland, with their highest finish of third place being achieved in 2003. History The club was founded in 1953 by a group of workers from the Northern Shipyard as part of a bigger sports club. Initially the club used the name Polonia Gdańsk. They changed their name to Stoczniowiec Gdańsk in 1970 when the club officially became part of the newly created multi-sports club Stoczniowiec Gdańsk. In 1972 the club moved to their new home, Hala Olivia after the completion of the stadiums construction, and Stoczniowiec saw themselves playing in the Ekstraklasa for the first time. Lechia-Polonia Gdańsk is a now defunct team which played in the Polish second division from 1998 to 2001. The team was created by a merger of Lechia Gdańsk and Polonia Gdańsk. History Pre-merger Polonia Gdańsk Polonia Gdańsk were founded in 1945 as NS Nit Gdańsk. After years of playing football in the lower divisions, and further name changes (Stal Gdańsk and RKS Stoczniowiec Gdańsk ). The team finally found stability and were called Polonia Gdańsk. The team finally achieved promotion to the second division in 1973 after winning their division, and finishing as runners up the previous season. The 1970s saw the team's high point in their history. Lechia Gdańsk () is a Polish football club based in Gdańsk. The club was founded in 1945 by people expelled from Lwów, who were supporters of Poland's oldest football team Lechia Lwów, founded in 1903. The club's name comes from Lechia, a poetic name for Poland, and is a continuation of the name used by the club based in Lwów. In their early years, Lechia enjoyed some success, most notably finishing third in the Polish top division, before spending decades in the second and third tiers. In the early 1980s, Lechia won the Polish Cup, the Polish SuperCup, and played in a European competition for the first time. After having two mergers with other teams in the 1990s the club had to restart from the sixth tier in 2001.
