Polly Klaas Foundation
The Polly Klaas Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity organization devoted to preventing crimes against children, assisting in the recovery of missing children, and lobbying for legislative assistance. The foundation was formed October 23, 1993, to search for Polly Klaas. Its executive director is Robert De Leo. It has expanded its mission and now searches for many missing children. The Polly Klaas Foundation also provides kits for parents to teach abduction prevention in a way that they state is not frightening for children. It distributes over 100,000 of these kits per year. The Polly Klaas Foundation worked with Convio to send targeted letters to state and federal officials to implement Amber Alerts in all 50 states. Adam John Walsh (November 14, 1974 – July 27, 1981) was an American child who was abducted from a Sears department store at the Hollywood Mall in Hollywood, Florida on July 27, 1981. His severed head was found two weeks later in a drainage canal alongside Highway 60/ Yeehaw Junction in rural Indian River County, Florida. His death garnered national interest and was made into the 1983 television film ''Adam'', seen by 38 million people in its original airing. Adam’s father, John Walsh, became an advocate for victims of violent crimes and was the host of the television program '' America's Most Wanted'' and, later, ''In Pursuit with John Walsh''. Elizabeth Ann Smart was kidnapped at age fourteen on June 5, 2002, by Brian David Mitchell from her home in the Federal Heights neighborhood of Salt Lake City, Utah. The murder of Megan Nicole Kanka (December 7, 1986 – July 29, 1994) occurred in Hamilton Township, Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. Seven-year-old Megan Kanka was raped and murdered by her neighbor, Jesse Timmendequas, after he lured her into his house; Timmendequas had previously been convicted for child molestation.
