Alaska
Alaska ( ; russian: Аляска, Alyaska; ale, Alax̂sxax̂; ; ems, Alas'kaaq; Yup'ik: ''Alaskaq''; tli, Anáaski) is a state located in the Western United States on the northwest extremity of North America. John Green Brady
John (James) Green Brady (May 25, 1847 – December 17, 1918) was an American politician who served as the Governor of the District of Alaska from 1897 to 1906. He was forced to resign due to his alleged involvement with the fraudulent Reynolds–Alaska Development Company. Childhood John Green Brady was born in New York City. Upon the death of his mother, his father re-married. Brady did not get along well with his step-mother, and at the age of eight ran away from home to avoid beatings from his drunken father. He was found living on the streets of New York City by Theodore Roosevelt, Sr. a well-known and popular New York City philanthropist and the father of future US 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt. Many years later, as an adult, Brady would approach the younger Theodore Roosevelt, then governor of New York, at a 1900 conference in Portland, Oregon. Daniel Sutherland
Daniel Alexander Sutherland (April 17, 1869 – March 24, 1955), nicknamed "Fighting Dan", was an American businessperson and politician who served in the United States House of Representatives during the 1920s as the delegate from what was then the Alaska Territory. Sutherland was born in Pleasant Bay, Nova Scotia on Cape Breton Island in Canada. He moved with his parents to Essex in the U.S. state of Massachusetts in 1876, where he attended the public schools. He was later employed as a grocer's clerk, and subsequently engaged in the fish business. Sutherland moved to Circle City, Alaska in 1898. When gold was discovered in the sands of Nome in 1900 he moved across the territory and became a prospector eventually becoming a co-owner of a mining company. In 1909, he moved to Juneau. Scott Cordelle Bone
Scott Cardelle Bone (February 15, 1860January 26, 1936) was the fourth Territorial Governor of Alaska, serving from 1921 to 1925. A Republican, he was appointed by President Warren G. Harding. He is perhaps best known for making the decision to use dog sleds to transport diphtheria antitoxin 674 miles rather than use a plane in the now-famous 1925 Serum Run, (also known as the "Great Race of Mercy") from which the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race stems. George Barnes Grigsby
George Barnes Grigsby (December 2, 1874 – May 9, 1962) was a delegate to the United States House of Representatives from the Territory of Alaska. Early life and education He was born in Sioux Falls, Dakota (now South Dakota), and was a son of Fannie (Kingsbury) Grigsby and Melvin Grigsby, a prominent South Dakota political and military leader. His siblings included Sioux K. Grigsby and John T. Grigsby, both of whom served as South Dakota's lieutenant governor. Grigsby attended the public schools, State University in Vermillion, South Dakota, and Sioux Falls University. Charles August Sulzer
Charles August Sulzer (February 24, 1879 – April 15, 1919) was a delegate to the United States House of Representatives from the Territory of Alaska from 1917 to 1919. Life and career Sulzer was born on February 24, 1879, in Roselle, New Jersey in Union County, the son of Lydia (Jelleme), who was Frisian, and Thomas Sulzer, a German immigrant. He attended the public schools, Pingry School in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Berkeley Academy in New York City, and the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. During the Spanish–American War, he served with the Fourth Regiment, New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. Charles Sulzer moved to Alaska in 1902 and engaged in mining. John Franklin Alexander Strong
John Franklin Alexander Strong (October 15, 1856 – July 27, 1929) was a Canadian-born journalist who was the second governor of Alaska Territory from 1913 to 1918. Background John Franklin Alexander Strong was born in Salmon Creek, a small farming community in Queens County, New Brunswick, Canada on October 15, 1856, the son of Adam Robert and Janet (Nicholl) Strong . He graduated from the New Brunswick Normal School in 1874. After graduation he spent the next fourteen years working as a store owner and teacher throughout the province. On December 31, 1879 he married Elizabeth A. Aitkens of Fredericton, New Brunswick. The marriage produced three children: Jane, Elizabeth, and Robert. James Wickersham
James Wickersham (August 24, 1857 – October 24, 1939) was a district judge for Alaska, appointed by U.S. President William McKinley to the Third Judicial District in 1900. He resigned his post in 1908 and was subsequently elected as Alaska's delegate to Congress, serving until 1917 and then being re-elected in 1930. He was instrumental in the passage of the Organic Act of 1912, which granted Alaska territorial status, introduced the Alaska Railroad Bill, legislation to establish McKinley Park, and the first Alaska Statehood Bill in 1916. He was among those responsible for the creation of the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines, which later became the University of Alaska. A residence hall on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus is named in his honor. Wickersham was born near Patoka, Illinois and moved in 1883 with his wife, Deborah, to Tacoma, Washington Territory, where he became a judge. Walter Eli Clark
Walter Eli Clark (January 7, 1869 – February 4, 1950) was an American journalist and newspaper publisher. In addition to his journalistic activities, he was the last Governor of the District of Alaska from 1909 to 1912, and the first Governor of Alaska Territory from 1912 to 1913. Background Clark was born on January 7, 1869, to Oren Andrus and Jeannette (Jones) Clark in Ashford, Connecticut. He was educated in public school and in 1887 graduated from the Connecticut State Normal School (now Central Connecticut State University). Clark taught at a school in Waterville, Connecticut, before becoming Principal of Manchester, Connecticut's grade school. In 1891 he enrolled at Williston Seminary. Thomas Cale
Thomas Cale (September 17, 1848February 3, 1941) was a delegate to the United States House of Representatives from the District of Alaska. He was born in Underhill, Vermont, in Chittenden County. He attended the district schools and Bell Academy at Underhill Flats. In 1866, he moved to Fort Edward, New York, in Washington County. He taught school in Underhill Center, Vermont, in 1867 and 1868. He moved to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, in 1869, taught school in several districts in Fond du Lac County, and then engaged in agricultural pursuits near Eden, Wisconsin. He was the town clerk of Eden from 1881 to 1884. From 1884 to 1886, he was a member of the Board of Supervisors of Fond du Lac County. Alaska Territory
The Territory of Alaska or Alaska Territory was an organized incorporated territory of the United States from August 24, 1912, until Alaska was granted statehood on January 3, 1959. The territory was previously Russian America, 1784–1867; the Department of Alaska, 1867–1884; and the District of Alaska, 1884–1912. Origin Passage of the 1899 Criminal Code which, among other things, included a tax on liquor, led to increased calls for Alaskan representation in Congress, and the debate finally ended on August 24, 1912, when the Alaska District became an organized, incorporated territory of the United States.
