Polish Uruguayans
A Polish Uruguayans is a Uruguayan citizen of full or partial Polish people, Polish ancestry. The Polish people, Polish arrived in Uruguay at the end of the 19th century. The most recent figure is from the 2011 Uruguayan census, which revealed 497 people who declared Poland as their country of birth. Other sources claim around 5,000 Poles in Uruguay. Similar to neighboring country Argentina, often, Poles came when the Germans and the Russians ruled Poland and so were known as "Germans" or "Russians". Most Polish Uruguayans belong to the Roman Catholic Church; they have their own chapel in the Atahualpa neighbourhood. There is also a significant Polish Jewish minority. Montevideo () is the Capital city, capital and List of cities in Uruguay, largest city of Uruguay. According to the 2011 census, the city proper has a population of 1,319,108 (about one-third of the country's total population) in an area of . Jan Kobylański
Jan Kobylański (21 July 1923, Równe, Poland – 27 March 2019, Montevideo, Uruguay) was a Polish-Paraguayan businessman. He was the founder of the Union of Polish Associations and Organizations in Latin America ( pol. ''Unia Stowarzyszeń i Organizacji Polskich w Ameryce Łacińskiej, USOPAŁ'') the largest Polish immigrant organization of South America. He was also a founder of one of the world's largest companies involved in editing postage stamps, and coins mintage. He has written books on philately, as well as on the mediation policy of the Roman Curia. He was formerly the honorary consul of Poland to Paraguay, and the honorary consul of Paraguay to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain. Paulina Luisi
Paulina Luisi (1875–1950) was a leader of the feminist movement in the country of Uruguay. In 1909, she became the first Uruguayan woman to earn a medical degree and was a firm advocate of sex education in the schools. She represented Uruguay in international women's conferences and traveled throughout Latin America and Europe. She was also the first Latin American woman to participate in the League of Nations and became one its most influential early activists. Her work has had a lasting effect on women of the Americas. Matías Vitkieviez (born 16 May 1985) is a Uruguayan-born Swiss association footballer who plays for Étoile Carouge. Early life Vitkieviez lived in Montevideo, Uruguay, until 1999 when together with his mother and brother he emigrated to Geneva, Switzerland because of family economic problems. Rodrigo Hernán Petryk Vidal (; born 21 October 1994) is a Uruguayan professional footballer who plays as a defender for Wanderers, on loan from Peñarol. Career Petryk's career began in 2013 with Atenas, with the defender featuring for the Uruguayan Segunda División club in the 2013–14 campaign. Ladislao Mazurkiewicz Iglesias (; 14 February 1945 – 2 January 2013) was a Uruguayan footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Career Mazurkiewicz helped the Uruguay national team qualify for the semifinals of the 1970 World Cup, where the ''charrúas'' were stopped by the eventual champion, Brazil. He was elected the best goalkeeper of that tournament. He also played for the Brazilian side Atlético Mineiro. During his international career (1965–74), he earned a total of 37 appearances with the national team of his native Uruguay. He coached Peñarol from 1988–89. Personal life Mazurkiewicz's father was Polish and his mother Spanish. Though of Polish ancestry, he did not know Polish and never visited Poland. Francisco Majewski
Francisco Majewski (1 May 1939 – 22 April 2012) was a professional footballer who played in the Uruguayan Primera División and Mexican Primera División. Career Born in Montevideo, Majewski played as a central defender and was an imposing figure at 1.84 meters and 187 kilos. He began playing for the youth side of Peñarol. At age 15, he joined Peñarol's senior side, where he would deputy for William Martínez. He won three Uruguayan league titles and the 1960 Copa Libertadores and played in the 1960 Intercontinental Cup before leaving the club.
