Jerzy Skolimowski
Jerzy Skolimowski (, born 5 May 1938) is a Polish film director, screenwriter, dramatist and actor. A graduate of the prestigious National Film School in Łódź, Skolimowski has directed more than twenty films since his 1960 début ''Oko wykol'' (''The Menacing Eye''). In 1967 he was awarded the Golden Bear prize for his film '' Le départ''. Among his other notable films is '' Deep End'' (1970), starring Jane Asher and John Moulder Brown. He lived in Los Angeles for over 20 years where he painted in a figurative, expressionist mode and occasionally acted in films. He returned to Poland, and to film making as a writer and director, after a 17-year hiatus with '' Cztery noce z Anną'' (''Four Nights with Anna'') in 2008. He received the Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement at the 2016 Venice Film Festival. Vladimír Michálek (born 2 November 1956 in Mladá Boleslav) is a Czech film director and screenwriter. Life Michálek graduated from Czech film Academy ''FAMU'', Prague, in 1992. Starting during his academic study he was filming documentaries. He joined the Barrandov Studios as assistant director, where he worked with Andrew Birkin (Burning Secret), Reinhard Hauff, Ted Kotcheff ( The Shooter), Margarethe von Trotta and Bernhard Wicki. He has four children. Work 1994 was the year of the release of his first feature film, ''Amerika'', a free adaptation of the Kafka novel. In 1996 ''Forgotten Light'' followed, a film adaption of the Jakub Deml novel. The film ran on the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, as did this next movie, ''Sekal Has to Die'', two years later. The Debt (1999 Film)
''The Debt'' ( pl, Dług) is a 1999 Polish film directed by Krzysztof Krauze. It is based on a true event that took place in Warsaw, Poland in the early 1990s. Plot After looking for financial backing to start a business importing Italian scooters, college friends Adam and Stefan meet businessman Gerard. While initially very helpful, Gerard soon turns violent, and begins to blackmail the pair for increasingly large sums of money while psychologically terrorizing the two men. Unable to find help from the police, the two men plan to kill Gerard. The movie is based on the true story of Sławomir Sikora and Artur Bryliński, who were later pardoned by the President of Poland because of exposure from the film. Critical reception Critic Piotr Zwierzchowski compared Krauze's ''The Debt'' to Michael Hanecke's '' Funny Games'' writing that both films are similar in that they convey the same sense of "powerlessness of the main characters as well as the viewers against the morality-defying ... Jan Jakub Kolski (born 29 January 1956) is a Polish film director, cinematographer, and writer. Early life and career Kolski was born in Wrocław, and comes from a family closely connected to cinema. His father, Roman Kolski, and his sister, Ewa Pakulska were film editors. His brother, Włodzimierz Kolski, is a production manager. His paternal grandfather was a film producer. Kolski's wife, Grażyna Błęcka-Kolska is an actress. From age eleven until age fourteen, Kolski lived in a small village, Popielawy, near Tomaszów Mazowiecki and Łódź. Those years became the inspiration for his later films. During the late 1970s, he worked his way through the ranks at a TV station in his home town, ending up as chief director of photography. He then studied cinematography at the famous Film School in Łódź, where he now runs a screenplay workshop. In 2007 he gained his doctoral degree in film art.
