Polina Golland
Polina Golland (born 1971) is an Israeli-American computer scientist specializing in medical image computing and biomedical image analysis. She is Henry Ellis Warren (1894) Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and heads the medical vision group at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. Education and career After studying computer science at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and earning bachelor's and master's degrees there, Golland went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for doctoral study, earning a Ph.D. in 2001 with the dissertation ''Statistical Shape Analysis Of Anatomical Structures'' supervised by Eric Grimson. William Eric Leifur Grimson (born 1953) is a Canadian-born computer scientist and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he served as Chancellor from 2011 to 2014. Medical image computing (MIC) is an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of computer science, information engineering, electrical engineering, physics, mathematics and medicine. This field develops computational and mathematical methods for solving problems pertaining to medical images and their use for biomedical research and clinical care. The main goal of MIC is to extract clinically relevant information or knowledge from medical images. While closely related to the field of medical imaging, MIC focuses on the computational analysis of the images, not their acquisition.
