''Police Academy 5: Assignment: Miami Beach'' is a 1988 American comedy film directed by Alan Myerson. It is fifth installment in the ''Police Academy'' franchise, released on March 18, 1988. The film was given a PG rating for language and ribald humor. Steve Guttenberg was unable to star in this film due to scheduling conflicts with filming ''Three Men and a Baby''. The filmmakers decided instead to cast Matt McCoy as a new character. Plot Captain Harris finally finds a way to become Commandant of the Police Academy; the incumbent Commandant Lassard is past due for mandatory retirement. Alan Myerson
Alan Myerson (born July 1, 1940) is an Americans, American film and television director. Career Myerson began working in theatre in New York City, then directing The Second City in Chicago. He founded the improvisational comedy troupe The Committee (improv group), The Committee in San Francisco in 1963. Police Academy (franchise)
''Police Academy'' is a series of American comedy films, the first six of which were made in the 1980s and the seventh in 1994. The series opened with ''Police Academy'' (1984), which started with the premise that a new mayor had announced a policy requiring the police department to accept all willing recruits. The film followed a group of misfit recruits in their attempts to prove themselves capable of being police officers, and succeeding both in spite of and because of their eccentricities. The main character in the first four films, Carey Mahoney (Steve Guttenberg), was a repeat offender, who was forced to join the police academy as punishment. The seventh and to date last installment, ''Mission to Moscow'', was released in 1994. Guttenberg in September 2018 announced that a new ''Police Academy'' film was in the works. Ed Kovens (June 26, 1934 – August 21, 2007) was an American SAG, AFTRA, and AEA actor. Furthermore he was a Method acting instructor based in New York City. He was a member of the Actors Studio and worked with the legendary Lee Strasberg. Biography New York-bred Ed Kovens became a professional actor at 19 after acting and directing in high school and college. Archie Hahn (sometimes credited as Archie Hahn III, born November 1, 1941) is an American character actor and improviser best known for his appearances on the British version of ''Whose Line is it Anyway?'' and the 1988 movie '' Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach''.
