Prince Leopold Of Bavaria
Prince Leopold of Bavaria (Leopold Maximilian Joseph Maria Arnulf; 9 February 1846 – 28 September 1930) was born in Munich, the son of Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria (1821–1912) and his wife Archduchess Augusta of Austria (1825–1864). He was a Field Marshal (''Generalfeldmarschall'') who commanded German and Austro-Hungarian forces on the Eastern Front in World War I. Biography Military career Prince Leopold entered the Bavarian Army at the age of 15, and received his patent as a lieutenant dated 28 November 1861. He saw first combat during the Austro-Prussian War in 1866, where he commanded an artillery battery at Kissingen and Rossbrunn. In 1870, King Ludwig II of Bavaria sent Leopold to the battlefields of France, where the Bavarian Army was fighting alongside the Prussian Army in the Franco-Prussian War. Canfor Corporation is an integrated forest products company based in Vancouver, British Columbia. History The company traces its roots to the late 1930s when brothers-in-law John G. Prentice and L.L.G. "Poldi" Bentley (surname changed from Bloch-Bauer of the famous Bloch-Bauer family of Vienna, Austria) and their families left their native Austria just before the outbreak of World War II. They settled in Vancouver and built a small mill that was the beginning of the more than 75-year-old company. Ludwig Josef Johann Wittgenstein ( ; ; 26 April 1889 – 29 April 1951) was an Austrian-British philosopher who worked primarily in logic, the philosophy of mathematics, the philosophy of mind, and the philosophy of language. He is considered by some to be the greatest philosopher of the 20th century. From 1929 to 1947, Wittgenstein taught at the University of Cambridge. Leopold "Poldi" Kielholz (9 June 1911 – 4 June 1980) was a Swiss football striker. He participated in the 1934 FIFA World Cup, scoring 3 goals, and also in the 1938 FIFA World Cup. Historically, he was the first Swiss international to score a goal for his country in a World Cup tournament. He was wearing glasses during games. Leopoldine Kovarik (5 February 1919 – 2 November 1943) was a post office employee who lived and worked in a suburb on the south side of Vienna. After Anschluss, Austria was merged into Nazi Germany she became a German resistance to Nazism, resistance activist. During the Second World War she became a member of a group which used to write letters to members of the Wehrmacht, army encouraging them to desert. Aged 24, she was convicted under the usual charge of "preparing to commit high treason" (''"Vorbereitung zum Hochverrat"'') and guillotined at Vienna's :de:Landesgericht für Strafsachen Wien, regional penitentiary, which had incorporated its own execution chamber since the aftermath of the short-lived July Putsch, uprising of 1934. Poldy Bird (16 December 1941 – 1 June 2018) was an Argentinian writer and poet who contributed to several newspapers in Argentina and around the world. Life and works She was born in Paraná, Entre Ríos, Paraná, in the province of Entre Ríos Province, Entre Ríos, Argentina, but as a girl she lived in Buenos Aires. On 10 August 1949, when she was eight years old, her mother, Leopoldina Lichtschein, also a writer and poet, died in a train accident. This tragic episode marked Bird's life, but also signaled her destiny as a writer. At the age of thirteen she won a poetry contest. Poldi Hirsch (March 24, 1926 – ) was a German-born American architect who applied modernist principles to suburban houses and buildings in Havre de Grace, Maryland. Early life and education Hirsch was born Poldi Rothenberg on March 24, 1926, in Remscheid, Germany, the daughter of Isak Rottenberg and Malka Rottenberg. In 1939, she and her family fled Nazi Germany for Mandatory Palestine. She graduated from Herzliya Hebrew Gymnasium in Tel Aviv in 1946 and, encouraged by her father to pursue architecture, studied the subject for two years at the Hebrew Technical College, Haifa. Leopold Bloom is the fictional protagonist and hero of James Joyce's 1922 novel ''Ulysses''. His peregrinations and encounters in Dublin on 16 June 1904 mirror, on a more mundane and intimate scale, those of Ulysses/Odysseus in Homer's epic poem: The ''Odyssey''. Factual antecedents When Joyce first started planning a story in 1906 called "Ulysses" to be included in Dubliners, the central character was based on a Dublin acquaintance named Alfred Hunter whom Joyce had met traveling to a funeral in July 1904.
