Glowe is a municipality in the Vorpommern-Rügen district, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It is a state-recognised resort. Geography Glowe lies about 18 kilometres north of Bergen auf Rügen and is located at the western end of the boundary between the Jasmund peninsula and the narrow land bridge of Schaabe between the Baltic Sea (the bay of Tromper Wiek) and the lagoon of Großer Jasmunder Bodden. Großer Jasmunder Bodden
The Großer Jasmunder Bodden belongs to the Northern Rügener Boddens and is a water body on the southern edge of the Baltic Sea in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It is a ''bodden'', a type of lagoon that occurs in northern Europe especially on the coast of Pomerania. It lies within the island of Rügen, is around 14 kilometres long, an average of six kilometres wide and is up to nine metres deep with an average depth of 5.3m. The Großer Jasmunder Bodden has an area of 58.6 square kilometres; if the ''Breetzer Bodden'', ''Breeger Bodden'', ''Lebbiner Bodden'', ''Neuendorfer Wiek'' and ''Tetzitzer See'' are included the total area of water comes to over 94 square kilometres. Kreis Bergen (district of Bergen) was a ''Landkreis, Kreis'' on the island of Rügen in the district of Bezirk Rostock in East Germany from 1952 to 1955. History After the end of the Second World War the Landkreis Rügen, shire county of Rügen (''Landkreis Rügen''), which covered the island of Rügen, came under the Soviet Zone of Occupation and was incorporated into the state of Land Mecklenburg, Mecklenburg. The Bezirk Rostock was a district (''Bezirk'') of East Germany. The administrative seat and the main town was Rostock. History The district was established, with the other 13, on 25 July 1952, substituting the old German states. After 3 October 1990 it was dissolved following German reunification, becoming again part of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Schloss Spyker
The Spyker Castle (german: Schloss Spy(c)ker) and estate lie on the territory of the municipality of Glowe in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Spycker Castle is the oldest profane structure on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen. Spycker was first recorded in 1318. It belonged at that time to the Stralsund patrician family, the von Külpens. In 1344 a daughter from the House of von Külpen married the Jasmunds. As a result, the Spyker branch of the von Jasmunds was founded which died without issue in 1648. As a result of the Thirty Years' War, Pomerania, and hence Rügen, fell to Sweden under the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648. As a reward for his wartime services, Queen Christine of Sweden gave the now empty seat of Spycker in 1649 to the Swedish field marshal and later governor-general of Swedish Pomerania, Carl Gustav Wrangel. ''Fältmarskalk'' Carl Gustaf Wrangel (also Carl Gustav von Wrangel; 23 December 1613 – 5 July 1676) was a Swedish Statesman and Military Commander who commanded the Swedish forces in the Thirty Years', Torstenson, Bremen, Second Northern and Scanian Wars. A Baltic German, he held the ranks of a Field Marshal, Commander-in-Chief of the Swedish forces in Germany (1646–1648), and Lord High Admiral of Sweden (from 1657). Wrangel was Governor-General of Swedish Pomerania (1648–1652 and 1656–1676) and, from 1664, Lord High Constable of Sweden and a member of the Privy Council. He held the title of a Count of Salmis until 1665, when he became Count of Sölvesborg. It is substantially "prestressed" ( compressed) during production, in a manner that strengthens it against tensile forces which will exist when in service.
