Pok Oi Hospital
Pok Oi Hospital () is a charitable district general hospital in Hong Kong, serving the northwest New Territories. Located in Au Tau in Yuen Long, it was founded by residents in 1919 when Yuen Long was a still rural town. The hospital later became a charity organisation, and extended its services to include schools, homes for the elderly, social welfare and other areas. The hospital is now funded and managed by the charity and Hospital Authority. History A local shop owner, Wong Shu-kiu, reportedly conceived the hospital idea in 1913, and a village elder supported it. The hospital opened in 1919 as a "small dispensary and sick bay". The facility, which cost HK$3500 to build, provided free medical services and burials. The hospital was closed during the Japanese occupation. The Hospital Authority is a statutory body managing all the government hospitals and institutes in Hong Kong. It is under the governance of its board and is under the monitor of the Secretary for Food and Health of the Hong Kong Government. Its chairman is Henry Fan. History Before the establishment of the authority, all health and medical issues were under the management of the Medical and Health Department. In 1990, a new health administration system was introduced as part of the 1989 reforms. The establishment of the Authority served to rebuild state capacity amid the emergence of party politics in Hong Kong. The Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (), with a history dating back to 1870, is the oldest and largest charitable organisation in Hong Kong. The West Rail line () was a rapid transit line that formed part of the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) system in Hong Kong until 27 June 2021. The 300-bed hospital is part of the New Territories West Cluster serving the population of Yuen Long and Tuen Mun districts, particularly those in the Tin Shui Wai New Town. It opened in 2017.
