Index Finger
The index finger (also referred to as forefinger, first finger, second finger, pointer finger, trigger finger, digitus secundus, digitus II, and many other terms) is the second digit of a human hand. It is located between the thumb and the middle finger. It is usually the most dextrous and sensitive digit of the hand, though not the longest. It is shorter than the middle finger, and may be shorter or longer than the ring finger (see digit ratio). Anatomy "Index finger" literally means "pointing finger", from the same Latin source as '' indicate;'' its anatomical names are "index finger" and "second digit". The index finger has three phalanges. It does not contain any muscles, but is controlled by muscles in the hand by attachments of tendons to the bones. Uses A lone index finger held vertically is often used to represent the number 1 (but finger counting differs across cultures), or when held up or moved side to side (finger-wagging), it can be an admonitory gesture. Index (typography)
The manicule, , is a typographic mark with the appearance of a hand with its index finger extending in a pointing gesture. Originally used for handwritten marginal notes, it later came to be used in printed works to draw the reader's attention to important text. Though once widespread, it is rarely used today, except as an occasional archaic novelty. Terminology For most of its history, the mark has been inconsistently referred to by a variety of names. William H. Sherman, in the first dedicated study of the mark, uses the term ''manicule'' (from the Latin root ''manicula'', meaning "little hand"), but also identifies 15 further names which have been used: * hand * pointing hand * hand director * pointer * digit * fist * mutton fist * bishop's fist * index * * indicator * indicule * maniple * pilcrow The last three Sherman labels erroneous, with ''indicule'' and ''maniple'' being mishearings or conflations, and ''pilcrow'' properly referring to the paragraph mark, . Pointing The Finger
''Pointing the Finger'' is a studio album by the rock artist Kevin Coyne, released in 1981. Critical reception ''The Globe and Mail'' wrote that "Coyne, like Van Morrison, can be repetitious and his emotional range seems limited at times—but, when it comes to anguish, he has few peers." The album was described by Mark Cordery of the ''New Musical Express'': :"''The themes of this LP are generally the hoary old ones of 'Alienation'; the difficulty (and in many cases the tacitly accepted impossibility) of communication, and the insubstantiality and hence inadequacy of 'Religion'. Dealt with here in the 'soul-baring' 60's singer-songwriter style; mostly stripped of imagery, and completely of metaphor, it's a bleak but uncompelling vision. Not to say a narrow one.''" The title track dates from 1977 and Coyne's musical "England, England", and is described by him on the sleeve notes as covering "some of my ambivalent feelings about England and its vanished Empire."''Pointing the Fin ...
