Pointe-aux-Trembles Windmill
Pointe-aux-Trembles was a municipality, founded in 1674, that was annexed by Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in 1982. This was the last city to be merged into Montreal until the 2002 municipal reorganization. On January 1, 2002 this neighbourhood at the far east end of the Island of Montreal became part of the borough of Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles–Montréal-Est. On January 1, 2006 Montreal East demerged, and the borough became Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles. One can find a windmill, at the corner of Notre-Dame Street and Third Avenue, which was built in 1719. Its three storeys make it the tallest windmill in Québec that still stands. Pointe-aux-Trembles is a provincial electoral district in the Montreal region of Quebec, Canada that elects members to the National Assembly of Quebec. The district is located at the east point of the Island of Montreal and comprises the city of Montréal-Est and the neighbourhood of Pointe-aux-Trembles in the borough of Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles borough of Montreal. The history of the area around what is now known as Montreal, Montreal itself was established in 1642, located in what is now known as the province of Quebec, Canada, spans about 8,000 years. At the time of European contact, the area was inhabited by the St. Lawrence Iroquoians, a discrete and distinct group of Iroquoian-speaking indigenous people. They spoke Laurentian. Jacques Cartier became the first European to reach the area now known as Montreal in 1535 when he entered the village of '' Hochelaga'' on the Island of Montreal while in search of a passage to Asia during the Age of Exploration. Seventy years later, Samuel de Champlain unsuccessfully tried to create a fur trading post but the Mohawk of the Iroquois defended what they had been using as their hunting grounds. Jean Basset (died 1715)
Jean Basset ( – 20 November 1715) was a French Roman Catholic cleric and notary who served as a parish priest in New France from 1675 to 1715. Born in 1645 in France, Basset became an ecclesiastic in the Diocese of Lyons. In 1675, he traveled with other ecclesiastics to New France. Later in 1675, Basset was ordained as a priest. After his ordination, Basset served in the Cathedral-Basilica of Notre-Dame de Québec in Quebec City. In 1678, Basset was assigned to the ÃŽle d’Orléans parish near Quebec City. In 1680, he was reassigned to the Pointe-aux-Trembles parish in Montreal. In 1682, Basset was sent to the Repentigny parish near Montreal. In 1684, he was returned to Pointe-aux-Trembles, where he served until his death. In 1685, Basset and Marguerite Bourgeoys travelled to Ancienne Lorette as part of a successful effort to endow a convent in Pointe-aux-Trembles.
