Point Judith also known as Kingfisher Point is a geographic cape extending into Otsego Lake in the Town of Otsego north of Cooperstown, New York. Kingfisher Tower is located on the lake off Point Judith. Originally it was called Two Mile Point, but the point's present name is derived from Judith Hutter from The Deerslayer ''The Deerslayer, or The First War-Path'' (1841) was James Fenimore Cooper's last novel in his ''Leatherstocking Tales''. Otsego Lake (New York)
Otsego Lake is a lake located in Otsego County in the U.S. state of New York. It is the source of the Susquehanna River and largest lake in Otsego County. The Village of Cooperstown is located at the lake's southern end. Glimmerglass State Park is located on the lake's northeastern shore, and includes Hyde Hall, a large mansion constructed in 1817, that overlooks the lake. The Glimmerglass Opera, opened in June 1987, is located on the western shore. Between 10,000 and 12,000 years ago, glaciers of the Wisconsin glaciation filled the valley. Otsego Lake was formed when an ice tongue from a glacier carved out the Susquehanna River Valley. As the glaciers melted slowly, they filled in the valley they carved out. The lake takes its name from the Iroquois Indians, who inhabited the area around the lake in and before the 17th century. Otsego, New York
Otsego is a town in the north-central part of Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 3,900 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Lake Otsego, which forms part of the town's eastern border. History Gideon Hawley, a missionary, arrived in this area in 1753. William Cooper purchased land (Cooper Patent) that now is marked, in part, by Cooperstown. Major settlement began around 1788. The Town of Otsego was organized while still in Montgomery County in 1788 and is the oldest town in the county. Cooperstown, New York
Cooperstown is a village in and county seat of Otsego County, New York, United States. Most of the village lies within the town of Otsego, but some of the eastern part is in the town of Middlefield. Located at the foot of Otsego Lake in the Central New York Region, Cooperstown is approximately southwest of Albany, southeast of Syracuse and northwest of New York City. The population of the village was 1,852 as of the 2010 census. Cooperstown is the home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. The Farmers' Museum in the village opened in 1944 on farmland that had once belonged to James Fenimore Cooper. The Fenimore Art Museum and Glimmerglass Opera are also based here. Kingfisher Tower
Kingfisher Tower is a folly, built by Edward Clark in 1876, on the eastern shore of Otsego Lake at Point Judith. It is located north of Cooperstown, New York near County Highway 31. The tower was used in a scene in a movie in 1911. It is a Gothic Revival structure built by Clark "to beautify the lake" and "to provide construction jobs during an economic turndown". Clark made his fortune investing in Isaac Singer's sewing machine company, and the structure now belongs to his descendants. It is on private property and is usually approachable only from the lake. The Deerslayer
''The Deerslayer, or The First War-Path'' (1841) was James Fenimore Cooper's last novel in his ''Leatherstocking Tales''. Its 1740–1745 time period makes it the first installment chronologically and in the lifetime of the hero of the Leatherstocking tales, Natty Bumppo. Kingfishers are a family, the Alcedinidae, of small to medium-sized, brightly colored birds in the order Coraciiformes. They have a cosmopolitan distribution, with most species found in the tropical regions of Africa, Asia, and Oceania, but also can be seen in Europe. They can be found in deep forests near calm ponds and small rivers. The family contains 114 species and is divided into three subfamilies and 19 genera. All kingfishers have large heads, long, sharp, pointed bills, short legs, and stubby tails. Most species have bright plumage with only small differences between the sexes.
