Joel Roberts Poinsett
Joel Roberts Poinsett (March 2, 1779December 12, 1851) was an American physician, diplomat and botanist. He was the first U.S. agent in South America, a member of the South Carolina legislature and the United States House of Representatives, the first United States Minister to Mexico, a Unionist leader in South Carolina during the Nullification Crisis, Secretary of War under Martin Van Buren, and a co-founder of the National Institute for the Promotion of Science and the Useful Arts (a predecessor of the Smithsonian Institution). Poinsett County, Arkansas
Poinsett County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 24,583. The county seat is Harrisburg. Poinsett County is included in the Jonesboro–Paragould Combined Statistical Area. History Poinsett County was formed on February 28, 1838, and named for Joel Roberts Poinsett, U.S. Secretary of War. County business was initially conducted in the county judge's home until first court was held in Bolivar, upon completion of a courthouse in 1839. County government was moved in 1859 to Harrisburg, a more central locale designated as the new county seat. Poinsett County acquired its current boundaries in the years following this change, as portions were assigned to newly organized counties. Lake Poinsett State Park
Lake Poinsett State Park is a Arkansas state park on Crowley's Ridge in Poinsett County, Arkansas in the United States. The park was formed after the damming of Distress Creek to create a recreational lake in the county in 1960. The park is located along the western bank of the lake and is open for year-round for camping/picnicking. Boat rentals are available from February to November. History Activists in Harrisburg and elsewhere in Poinsett County began efforts to obtain a recreational lake in their area in the 1950s, but their efforts were not successful due to a lack of funds. The idea was adopted by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, who made plans to dam Distress Creek as funds became available, but the money would not come through until former Arkansas highway commissioner Dan Portis discussed the plan with Arkansas governor Orval Faubus. Poinsett Community Club
The Poinsett Community Club is a historic community center at Main and Poinsett Streets in Trumann, Arkansas. This large American Craftsman/Bungalow structure was designed by Watson B. Boggs and built in 1927, to provide a number of social resources to the employees of the Poinsett Lumber Company. The building was designed to house a gymnasium that doubles as a performing venue, meeting and classroom facilities, and a library. It has for many years been a major social center of the small community, hosting events, theatrical performances, and refugees from the area's periodic floods. Poinsett County Courthouse
The Poinsett County Courthouse is located on a city block of downtown Harrisburg, Arkansas, bounded by Court, North Main, Market, and East Streets. It is a two-story granite and concrete structure, set on a raised foundation. The central block is topped by a tiled hip roof, with an octagonal tower set on a square base at its center. The front facade has a Classical Revival tetrastyle Corinthian portico with a fully enclosed gable pediment. Wings on either side of the main block are lower in height, but project beyond the main block's front and back. They are capped by low balustrade surrounding a flat roof. The courthouse was designed by Mitchell Seligman of Pine Bluff. Construction began in 1918 and it was completed in 1920. This courthouse was built to replace an earlier courthouse which had been destroyed by fire on May 4, 1917. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Poinsett Lumber And Manufacturing Company Manager's House
The Poinsett Lumber and Manufacturing Company Manager's House, also known locally as the Singer Mansion, is a historic house at 512 Poinsett Avenue in Trumann, Arkansas. It is a single-story structure, with a varied roof line, and multiple exterior sheathing materials, including brick and stucco with false half-timbering typical of the Tudor Revival style, and recently applied modern siding. The house was designed by Edwin B. Phillips and built in 1935 for the Poinsett Lumber Company to house its senior on-site manager. It is, despite the modern siding, the only Tudor Revival building in Trumann, and the only surviving residence associated with the Poinsett Lumber Company, a major area employer in the first half of the 20th century. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. Poinsett House is a historic home located at Kenton, Kent County, Delaware. The house was built in the mid-18th century as a tenant house. The original section is a two-story, two-bay, one-room plan brick structure measuring 20 feet by 18 feet. Attached to it are two log wings added in the early 19th century. Lake Poinsett (Florida)
Lake Poinsett is a lake in Brevard County, Florida, United States, near Rockledge and Cocoa, with small portions in Orange County and Osceola County. It is the second-largest lake in Brevard County, after Lake Washington, though it is actually the smallest lake in Osceola County. It is the widest lake in Brevard County, with a distance of at its widest point. At the eastern portion of the lake, a channel connects the lake to Lake Florence and Barnett Lake. Lake Poinsett and all the other lakes flow northward as part of the St. Johns River system. It is where the Saint Johns River runs along county lines north of the lake. Poinsett Bridge
Poinsett Bridge is the oldest bridge in South Carolina and perhaps in the entire southeastern United States. Named for Joel Roberts Poinsett, it was built in 1820 as part of a road from Columbia, South Carolina, to Saluda Mountain. The stone bridge, which includes a Gothic arch and stretches over Little Gap Creek, may have been designed by Robert Mills, architect of the Washington Monument. Though no longer in use, the bridge remains largely intact and is part of the Poinsett Bridge Heritage Preserve. There is a nature trail a few hundred yards from the bridge. The bridge, about which ghost stories have been told for decades, is located off U.S. Highway 25 north of Greenville, South Carolina.After passing South Carolina Highway 11, turn right onto Old US 25. The Poinsett Hotel, or Westin Poinsett Hotel, is a twelve-story, landmark hotel in downtown Greenville, South Carolina, one of the first skyscrapers in Greenville. Named for Joel R. Poinsett, Secretary of War under President Millard Fillmore, the Poinsett replaced an earlier resort hotel, the Mansion House, built in 1824. In 1982, the Poinsett was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
