Poinsard
The Poinsard 25 hp or Mengin Type B is a small, two-cylinder, air-cooled, horizontally opposed aircraft engine built in France. it was manufactured by Établissements Pierre Mengin from a design by René Poinsard. Power was around 19 kW (25 hp) at 2,280 rpm. Design and development The first two engines built by Mengin were designed by René Poinsard and are often referred to by his name The Mengin B or Poinsard 25 hp was the first and smaller of the two. Aimed at very small, single seat sport aircraft it went into production from about 1933. Production ceased when France was invaded in 1940. SFCA Taupin
The SFCA Taupin was a French tandem-wing aircraft, designed to provide a simple, stable and safe aircraft able to take-off and land in small spaces. Design and development In 1907 Louis Peyret, a friend of Louis Blériot designed the tandem wing Bleriot VI. Alex Manerol, flying the Peyret Tandem won the 1922 Itford glider contest and in 1924 Peyret obtained a patent for it. He continued to build designs of this type as well as more conventional aircraft until his death in 1933, after which his patent rights were purchased by the ''Société Française de Construction Aéronautique'' (SFCA). In 1935 they designed and built the tandem wing Taupin which, apart from a different engine, was very similar to the Peyret VI of 1933. Taupin is the French vernacular name for beetles of the family Elateridae or click-beetles, known for their ability to jump rapidly into the air. Avia 50-MP
The Avia 50-MP was a French motor glider based on that of the Avia XV-A training glider. First flown in 1934, it was intended to introduce pilots to motor-gliders. Design and development In 1933 Avia introduced two designs based on their earlier training gliders but fitted with low powered engines, placing them amongst the first motor gliders. The Avia 50-MP (MP for moteur planeur or motor glider) was the more basic of the two and was a development of the Avia XV-A. The Avia 50-MP was a monoplane with a two piece high wing of rectangular plan, with blunted tips and about 4.5° of sweep. Broad chord ailerons filled about half the span. The roots were attached to a streamlined, fuselage mounted pillar, and each wing was braced from about half span to the lower fuselage with a pair of parallel struts. Piel CP-10 Pinocchio
The Piel CP-10 was a post-war French sports aircraft in the Pou du Ciel tradition and was the first design from Claude Piel to fly. Design and development The CP-10 Pinocchio was the first of Claude Piel's long line of light aircraft designs. Despite the common name, it was completely different to his second design, the CP-20 Pinocchio. Built by Piel and Roger Holleville, the CP-10 was a Pou du Ciel style, single seat tandem-wing aircraft, powered by a Mengin B flat-twin engine mounted in the nose with its cylinder heads exposed for cooling and driving a two bladed propeller. The larger, forward wing was mounted above the flat sided fuselage on each side by two pairs of short, inverted-V struts from the fuselage to the wing rotation axis. Jodel D
Société Avions Jodel is a French aircraft company started in 1946 by Édouard Joly and his son-in-law Jean Délémontez. History Jodel designed a range of light aeroplanes shortly after the Second World War. The popular myth is that the two industrialists, with no formal aerodynamics training, set about designing a single-seat aircraft with some spare plywood and a small engine, a Poinsard 25hp 2-cyl. The result was the 1948 D9 Bébé (Baby) model. In fact, the two had much experience of building and designing aircraft, Delemontez being a trained aeronautical engineer, and Joly having built an aircraft before the war. The French government bought many of the aircraft, with more than 500 D9s being built during the next twenty years. Bessard-Millevoye Moineau (Sparrow) was a single seat, low-powered French biplane intended to increase participation in popular aviation. Only one was built. Design The single seat Moineau was designed to lower the costs of flying. It was low-powered, making it relatively cheap to build and run, and folding wings made it compact to store. It was capable of being flown by part-time pilots but also able, in more experienced hands, to perform aerobatics. The Moineau was an equal span single bay biplane with bays defined by N-form interplane struts and wings with only slight stagger. Eklund TE-1
The Eklund TE-1 was a Finnish-built single-seat flying boat of the late 1940s. Design and development The TE-1 was designed in late 1948 by Torolf Eklund, who was a Finnish aircraft designer for Valtion Lentokonetehdas between 1935 and 1962. The TE-1 was financed and built by Eklund as a private venture. Operational history The TE-1 first flew in February 1949 powered by a 28 h.p. Poinsard engine. This powerplant suffered a crankcase failure, and as spare parts were no longer available, it was replaced by a Continental A40-5 engine. At the time of its first flight, the TE-1 was claimed to be the world's smallest flying boat. The aircraft last flew in 1969. The Mignet HM.14 ''Flying Flea'' (''Pou du Ciel'' literally "Louse of the Sky" in French) is a single-seat light aircraft first flown in 1933, designed for amateur construction. Flat-twin
A flat-twin engine is a two-cylinder internal combustion engine with the cylinders on opposite sides of the crankshaft. The most common type of flat-twin engine is the boxer-twin engine, where both pistons move inwards and outwards at the same time. The flat-twin design was patented by Karl Benz in 1896 and the first production flat-twin engine was used in the ''Lanchester 8 hp Phaeton'' car released in 1900. An ignition magneto, or high-tension magneto, is a magneto that provides current for the ignition system of a spark-ignition engine, such as a petrol engine. It produces pulses of high voltage for the spark plugs. The older term ''tension'' means ''voltage''.
