The Poetry Society of Texas (PST) is a 102 year old non-profit state-level poetry association in the U.S. state of Texas, affiliated with the National Federation of State Poetry Societies. The organization promotes poetry, conducts monthly and annual contests, issues annual poetry publications and organizes periodic conferences. History The Poetry Society of Texas was established in Dallas, Texas, on November 5, 1921, prompted mainly by poet Therese Lindsey, and chartered January 26, 2922. Since then, the organization has grown to be one of the largest state poetry associations in the United States with membership including 25 chapters and 300 poets. Its mission is to encourage the recognition, writing and appreciation of poetry. The society has published poetry books annually since 1922, featuring the year's prize-winning poetry. Poetry (derived from the Greek ''poiesis'', "making"), also called verse, is a form of literature that uses aesthetic and often rhythmic qualities of language − such as phonaesthetics, sound symbolism, and metre − to evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of, a prosaic ostensible meaning. National Federation Of State Poetry Societies
The National Federation of State Poetry Societies, Inc. (NFSPS) is a national organization of state poetry societies in the United States. It was established in 1959 and now includes affiliates in 32 U.S. states. The federation hosts conferences and maintains awards and educational programs related to poetry. History The National Federation of State Poetry Societies was established in Baton Rouge on October 17, 1959, by Mary B. Wall. The first conference was held in conjunction with the Louisiana State Poetry Society where national officers were elected. A constitution was adopted in Philadelphia in 1960, and the organization was incorporated in Madison, Wisconsin, in July 1966. The federation included 10 state affiliates at that time. By 2020 that number had grown to 32. Activities The NFSPS normally sponsors fifty annual poetry contests offering cash prizes, including a grand prize of $1,000. Dallas Public Library
The Dallas Public Library system serves as the municipal library system of the city of Dallas, Texas (USA). History In 1899, the idea to create a free public library in Dallas was conceived by the Dallas Federation of Women's Clubs, led by president Mrs. Henry (May Dickson) Exall. She helped raise US$11,000 from gifts from public school teachers, local businessmen, and Alfred Horatio Belo of ''The Dallas Morning News''. The library became a reality when Mrs. Exall requested and received a US$50,000 grant from philanthropist and steel giant Andrew Carnegie to construct the first library building in Dallas. On October 22, 1901, the Carnegie library opened at the corner of Harwood and Commerce streets with a head librarian, three assistants, and 9,852 volumes. Beauford Jester
Beauford Halbert Jester (January 12, 1893 – July 11, 1949) was an American politician who was the 36th governor of Texas, serving from 1947 until his death in office in 1949. He is the only Texas governor ever to have died in office. Jester was a veteran of World War I and known for reforms of prisons and the educational system of the state.
