Poduyane ( bg, Подуяне ) or Poduene ( ) is a residential complex and a district of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria with 85,996 inhabitants. It is located in the northeastern outskirts of the city and is divided into microregions. Poduyane consists of the neighbourhoods Suhata Reka, Hadzhi Dimitar, Poduyane, Stefan Karadzha, Levski, Levski-G, Levski-V. A former village, it was incoroparted in 1895. The district's holiday is celebrated on 1 June. History Poduene was first mentioned in 1453 as ''Poduyani''. The name is derived from the word ''poduy'', an adjective from ''pod'' ("soil") with the now-unproductive suffix ''–uy''. In that case ''poduy'' was a geographical term referring to a high flat country or a plain country at the foot of a hill. Poduene was the first village to be included within the city of Sofia in 1895 and was mentioned in the Elin Pelin works. Poduene Glacier ( bg, ледник Подуене, lednik Poduene, ) is the 3.3 km long and 2.4 km wide glacier on Pefaur (Ventimiglia) Peninsula, Danco Coast on the west side of Antarctic Peninsula, situated west of Agalina Glacier. It drains the north slopes of Mount Zeppelin, and flows northwestwards into Gerlache Strait east of Eckener Point. Stefan Karadzha (neighbourhood)
Stefan Karadzha ( bg, Стефан Караджа, ; 11 May 1840 – 31 July 1868) was a Bulgarian revolutionary from the national liberation movement and a cheta leader. He attempted to start a rebellion against the Ottoman Empire. Life He was born as Stefan Todorov Dimov () in the village of Ichme (now ''Stefan Karadzhovo''), near Yambol in Rumelia, and was reputedly a descendant of Momchil Voyvoda. Karadzha studied in Tulcea, Dobruja, but quit school due to lack of funding. During a wedding celebration, he defeated the famous Turkish wrestler Gaazi Plisa. Going in hiding for some time, as Ottoman authorities were searching for him, he then emigrated to Principality of Romania and later joined the First Bulgarian Legion in Belgrade, Principality of Serbia. Karadzha crossed the Danube from Wallachia a couple of times, carrying out revolutionary tasks. Dimitar Nikolov Asenov ( bg, Димитър Николов Асенов ; 10 May 1840 – 10 August 1868), better known as Hadzhi Dimitar ( ), was one of the most prominent Bulgarian voivode and revolutionaries working for the Liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. Biography Early life Dimitar was born in Sliven (İslimiye), which was then part of the Ottoman Empire, to the family of the merchant Nikola Asenov and his wife Marinka Asenova.
