''Plexus A1'' is a threaded installation by Mexican-American artist, Gabriel Dawe. It is an individual piece within the larger series entitled “Plexus.” The “Plexus” project attempts to represent the entire spectrum of visible light using only embroidery thread. The series is named after the term used to describe a network of branching blood vessels. This specific installation, Plexus A1, was installed in the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Museum.  It was a part of the “Wonder” exhibit, an event that featured the work of nine different contemporary artists and celebrated the reopening of the gallery after a two year renovation. Plexus A1 was designed without the use of a single mock-up or any aid from computer generated algorithms. Construction occurred in 2015 over the brief span of just 10 days. Gabriel Dawe
Gabriel Dawe (born 1973) is a Mexican-born artist living in Dallas, Texas, whose work is based on investigations of the visible spectrum of light. He has gained renown for his large-scale Plexus series of installations of sewing thread, though he also creates works on paper as well as other media. His work has been exhibited in the US, Canada, Belgium, Denmark, and the UK. Background Originally from Mexico City, Dawe initially trained as a graphic designer, but during his studies at the University of Texas at Dallas, he began to investigate the connection between fashion and architecture. His use of materials related to textiles stems from a childhood frustration of not being allowed by his grandmother to learn traditional needlework because of societal expectations for boys. Renwick Gallery
The Renwick Gallery is a branch of the Smithsonian American Art Museum located in Washington, D.C. that displays American craft and decorative arts from the 19th to 21st century. The gallery is housed in a National Historic Landmark building that was opened in 1859 on Pennsylvania Avenue and originally housed the Corcoran Gallery of Art (now one block from the White House and across the street from the Old Executive Office Building). Pythagorean Theorem

Trompe L’oeil Effect
A trompe is a water-powered air compressor, commonly used before the advent of the electric-powered compressor. A trompe is somewhat like an airlift pump working in reverse. Trompes were used to provide compressed air for bloomery furnaces in Catalonia and the USA. The presence of a trompe is a signature attribute of a Catalan forge, a type of bloomery furnace. Trompes can be enormous. At Canadian Hydro Developers' Ragged Chute facility in New Liskeard, Ontario, water falls down a shaft deep and across to generate compressed air for mining equipment and ventilation.Ragged Chutes
