Plaza Universidad
Plaza Universidad is a shopping mall located on Avenida Universidad in colonia Santa Cruz Atoyac, Benito Juárez borough, Mexico City. It was the first shopping center anchored by a department store built in the city, opened on November 28, 1969. It is still anchored by Sears Mexico, as well as Sanborn's, Yak Casino, and Cinépolis multicinemas. Upon its opening, with 75 shops and 500 parking spaces, it was the largest shopping center in Mexico, retaining that title until 1971 when the larger Plaza Satélite opened. Shopping Mall
A shopping mall (or simply mall) is a North American term for a large indoor shopping center, usually anchored by department stores. The term "mall" originally meant a pedestrian promenade with shops along it (that is, the term was used to refer to the walkway itself which was merely bordered by such shops), but in the late 1960s, it began to be used as a generic term for the large enclosed shopping centers that were becoming commonplace at the time. In the U.K., such complexes are considered shopping centres (Commonwealth English: shopping centre), though "shopping center" covers many more sizes and types of centers than the North American "mall". Benito Juárez, Mexico City
Benito Juárez (), is a borough (''demarcación territorial'') in Mexico City. It is a largely residential area, located to the south of historic center of Mexico City, although there are pressures for areas to convert to commercial use. It was named after Benito Juárez, president in the 19th century. The borough has the highest socioeconomic index in the country as it is primarily populated by the middle and upper middle classes. Sears, Roebuck and Co. Grupo Sanborns is a retailing arm of the Carlos Slim-run Grupo Carso that includes the namesake Sanborns chain, Mixup music stores, iShop electronics stores, Saks Fifth Avenue and Sears department stores in Mexico, and other formats. The namesake Sanborns chain began in the early 20th century as a transplant of the American coffee shop ( diner) to Mexico City. Plaza Satélite
Plaza Satélite is a shopping mall in the northwest part of Greater Mexico City in Ciudad Satélite on the Anillo Periferico ring road. Opened on October 13, 1971, it was Mexico's first American-style shopping mall. It has over 240 stores and services. History Plaza Satélite began construction in 1968 in Ciudad Satélite with the blueprints of architect Juan Sordo Madaleno. It was inaugurated on October 13, 1971 with four anchors: Sears Roebuck, Liverpool, Sanborn's, and París-Londres, with 150 retail units in total including restaurants, banks and the largest movie theater in Latin America with 1,400 seats. Juan Sordo Madaleno (October 1916, Mexico City – 12 March 1985, Idem) was a Mexican architect. Biography Sordo Madaleno was one of the most important Mexican architects of his era.
