Plaza Jacaranda
Pasaje Jacaranda, officially ''Plaza Comercial Plaza Jacaranda'', designed by architects Ramón Torres Martínez and Héctor Velázquez Moreno, was an open-air shopping center opened in 1959 in the Zona Rosa, Mexico City, at the time considered the hippest and most cosmopolitan district of the city. Etymology Jacaranda mimosifolia is a common flowering tree in Mexico City. History Artists such as Carlos Monsivais, José Luis Cuevas and Alejandro Jodorowsky frequented the plaza. Its shops and art galleries had full-width, full-height glass windows facing an interior courtyard. It was located on the east side of Genova Street between Londres and Liverpool streets. Then-famous restaurants such as Le Bistrot and Alfredo's, as well as La Trucha Vagabunda, Toulouse-Lautrec, and La Cabaña were located in Pasaje Jacaranda, as was the jewelry shop of jeweler and sculptor Ernesto Paulsen. Ramón Torres Martínez (November 22, 1924 - September 4, 2008) was a Mexican architect. His 1950s designs were influenced by the Bauhaus movement. Héctor Velázquez Moreno (born Mexico City, 1922probably 1923 – died 2006) was a Mexican architect. Biography Velázquez studied at the Faculty of Architecture of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) after 1949, and afterwards at Harvard University and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Due to a scholarship he was enabled to visit also the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In the 1950s, he designed together with notable architects the Ciudad Universitaria of the UNAM. Zona Rosa, Mexico City
Zona Rosa ( en, "Pink Zone") is a neighborhood in Mexico City which is known for its shopping, nightlife, gay community and its recently established Korean community. The neighborhood is officially part of the Colonia Juárez colonia or official neighborhood, located just west of the historic center of Mexico City. The area's history as a community began when it was developed as a residential district for wealthy foreigners and Mexico City residents looking to move from the city center. The development of the area stalled during and after the Mexican Revolution. From the 1950s to 1980s the neighborhood was revitalized by artists, intellectuals and the city's elite who repopulated the area, gave it a bohemian reputation and attracted exclusive restaurants and clubs for visiting politicians and other notables. ''Jacaranda mimosifolia'' is a sub-tropical tree native to south-central South America that has been widely planted elsewhere because of its attractive and long-lasting violet-colored flowers. It is also known as the jacaranda, blue jacaranda, black poui, Nupur or fern tree. Older sources call it ''J. acutifolia'', but it is nowadays more usually classified as ''J. mimosifolia''. In scientific usage, the name "jacaranda" refers to the genus ''Jacaranda'', which has many other members, but in horticultural and everyday usage, it nearly always means the blue jacaranda. In its native range in the wild, ''J. mimosifolia'' is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN. Description The tree grows to a height of up to . José Luis Cuevas
José Luis Cuevas (February 26, 1934 – July 3, 2017) was a Mexican artist, he often worked as a painter, writer, draftsman, engraver, illustrator, and printmaker. Cuevas was one of the first to challenge the then dominant Mexican muralism movement as a prominent member of the Generación de la Ruptura (English: Breakaway Generation). He was a mostly self-taught artist, whose styles and influences are moored to the darker side of life, often depicting distorted figures and the debasement of humanity. He had remained a controversial figure throughout his career, not only for his often shocking images, but also for his opposition to writers and artists who he feels participate in corruption or create only for money. In 1992, the José Luis Cuevas Museum was opened in the historic center of Mexico City holding most of his work and his personal art collection. Alejandro Jodorowsky
Alejandro Jodorowsky Prullansky (; born 17 February 1929) is a Chilean-French avant-garde filmmaker. Best known for his 1970s films '' El Topo'' and '' The Holy Mountain'', Jodorowsky has been "venerated by cult cinema enthusiasts" for his work which "is filled with violently surreal images and a hybrid blend of mysticism and religious provocation". Born to Jewish-Ukrainian parents in Chile, Jodorowsky experienced an unhappy and alienated childhood, and so immersed himself in reading and writing poetry. Dropping out of college, he became involved in theater and in particular mime, working as a clown before founding his own theater troupe, the ''Teatro Mimico'', in 1947.
