Plaza De La Virgen Blanca
Plaza de la Virgen Blanca is one of the oldest meeting points in Vitoria-Gasteiz in the Basque Country of Spain. In the middle of it there is the monument to La batalla de Vitoria a battle which took place in the city in 1813 during the Napoleonic wars. History In the Middle Ages the square was Vitoria's city center. It was the place where all activities, including bullfights and food markets, were carried out. At the end of the 18th century, Plaza de España or Plaza Nueva was built right next to it by Vitorian architect Justo Antonio de Olaguibel Justo Antonio de Olaguibel was a Spanish architect born in Vitoria on 7 August 1752. Battle Of Vitoria
At the Battle of Vitoria (21 June 1813) a British, Portuguese and Spanish army under the Marquess of Wellington broke the French army under King Joseph Bonaparte and Marshal Jean-Baptiste Jourdan near Vitoria in Spain, eventually leading to victory in the Peninsular War. Background In July 1812, after the Battle of Salamanca, the French had evacuated Madrid, which Wellington's army entered on 12 August 1812. Deploying three divisions to guard its southern approaches, Wellington marched north with the rest of his army to lay siege to the fortress of Burgos, away, but he had miscalculated the enemy's strength, and on 21 October he had to abandon the Siege of Burgos and retreat. By 31 October he had abandoned Madrid too and retreated first to Salamanca then to Ciudad Rodrigo, near the Portuguese frontier, to avoid encirclement by French armies from the north-east and south-east. Justo Antonio de Olaguibel was a Spanish architect born in Vitoria on 7 August 1752. He died in Vitoria on 11 February 1818. Olaguibel was one of the most important neoclassic architects in the Basque Country. The architect studied in the ''Image School'' in Vitoria and in ''Royal San Fernando Academy'' of Madrid (in Spanish Academia Real San Fernando). He designed many landmarks of Vitoria, such as ''Los Arquillos'' or the ''Plaza España'' of Vitoria. He also designed two roads: the one which connected Vitoria with La Guardia and the road that connected Briñas and Amurrio, in 1792 and in 1793.
