''Playing Around'' is a 1930 American pre-Code drama film with songs, starring Alice White, Chester Morris and William Bakewell. It was adapted from the story "Sheba", written by Viña Delmar. The film was produced and distributed by First National Pictures, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Plot Alice White plays Sheba Miller, a working-class girl who dreams about living a life of luxury. Her father runs a cigar store while she works as a stenographer. Jack, a soda jerk, is madly in love with her and has even asked her father for his consent to their marriage. Although Pa Miller likes Jack and would like to see his daughter marry him, Sheba refuses him on the wage he currently earns. One day, she convinces him to take her to a fancy exclusive nightclub, the Pirates Den. Once they arrive and are seated, he is shocked at the prices and suggests that they go elsewhere; this leads to an argument. Mervyn LeRoy
Mervyn LeRoy (; October 15, 1900 – September 13, 1987) was an American film director and producer. During the 1930s, he was one of the two great practitioners of economical and effective film directing at Warner Bros., Warner Brothers studios, the other being his colleague Michael Curtiz. LeRoy's most acclaimed films of his tenure at Warners include ''Little Caesar (film), Little Caesar'' (1931), ''I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang'' (1932), ''Gold Diggers of 1933'' (1933) and ''They Won't Forget'' (1937). LeRoy left Warners and moved to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios in 1939 to serve as both director and producer. He is best known for the 1939 film ''The Wizard of Oz''. Marion Byron (born Miriam Bilenkin; 1911 – 1985) was an American silent film actress and comedian. Early years Born in Dayton, Ohio, Byron was one of five daughters of Louis and Bertha Bilenkin. Career She made her first stage appearance at the age of 13 and followed it with a role in actor-producer Lupino Lane's ''Hollywood Music Box Revue'' opposite Fannie Brice. It was while appearing in this production that she was given the nickname "Peanuts" because of her short stature. While appearing in ''The Strawberry Blonde'', she came to the attention of Buster Keaton who signed her as his leading lady in the film '' Steamboat Bill, Jr.'' in 1928 when she was just 16.
