Playground 52
Playground 52 (often written as Playground 52 LII) is a playground at 681 Kelly Street in the Longwood neighborhood of the Bronx, in New York City. The playground features basketball and handball courts, bathrooms, a spray shower, and a skate park. as well as an amphitheater with a large dance floor. Originally built in the 1950s as a playground for 52, the playground suffered decay during the 1970s. In 1980, a group of volunteers known as 52 People for Progress (52 People for Change in some sources) began to rehabilitate the park in collaboration with local musicians such as Mike Amadeo and Eddie Palmieri. Although the school was renamed as MS 302 during the 1990s, the playground is still referred to as Playground 52. The park is owned by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and is used as a venue for musical performances. The 52 People for Progress volunteers continue to maintain the park. Casa Amadeo, antigua Casa Hernández is the oldest, continuously-occupied Latin music store in New York City, and the Bronx, having opened in 1941. Eddie Palmieri
Eddie Palmieri (born December 15, 1936) is an American Grammy Award-winning pianist, bandleader, musician, and composer of Puerto Rican ancestry. He is the founder of the bands La Perfecta, La Perfecta II, and Harlem River Drive. Early life Palmieri's parents moved to New York from Ponce, Puerto Rico, in 1926 and settled in the South Bronx, a largely Jewish neighborhood. There, he and his elder brother Charlie Palmieri were born. He accompanied Charlie and participated in many talent contests when he was eight years old. Palmieri continued his education in the city's public school system where he was constantly exposed to jazz music. He took piano lessons and performed at Carnegie Hall at the age of eleven. Influenced by Thelonious Monk and McCoy Tyner, and inspired by his older brother, he determined to someday form his own band — which he accomplished in 1950 when he was fourteen years old. Spohn Ranch is a skatepark design and construction firm based in Industry, California. The firm specializes in the construction and design of concrete skateparks and skate plazas, skateable art sculptures, several styles of ramps, and courses for skateboarding, BMX and motocross events. History The company began in the 1980s when founder and president, Aaron Spohn, was living in Venice Beach, California. He and his friends would skate the streets of Venice and occasionally build makeshift ramps on the boardwalk. The City would tolerate these ramps for a few weeks at a time before tearing them out.
