Player's Anthem
"Player's Anthem" is the first single released from the Junior M.A.F.I.A.'s debut album ''Conspiracy''. Produced by Clark Kent, the song contains a sample of The New Birth's song "You Are What I'm All About". Featuring a chorus by the Notorious B.I.G., "Player's Anthem" became a big hit for the group, peaking at 13 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and was certified gold by the RIAA on September 7, 1995 for sales of over 500,000 copies. The remix sounds similar to the original, but samples "Memory Lane" by Minnie Riperton. The song also contains a sample of Doug E. Fresh's "La Di Da Di" featuring Slick Rick. A French musician, Jérémie Mondon (a.k.a. Demon) contains a sample from this song for the track called, "Streets" for his album, "Midnight Funk". Junior M.A.F.I.A. and The Notorious B.I.G. first performed the song live at the 1995 Source Awards on August 3. The ''Billboard'' Hot 100 is the music industry standard record chart in the United States for songs, published weekly by ''Billboard'' magazine. Chart rankings are based on sales (physical and digital), radio play, and online streaming in the United States. The weekly tracking period for sales was initially Monday to Sunday when Nielsen started tracking sales in 1991, but was changed to Friday to Thursday in July 2015. This tracking period also applies to compiling online streaming data. ''Showtime at the Apollo'' (formerly ''It's Showtime at the Apollo'' and ''Apollo Live'') is an American variety show that first aired in syndication from September 12, 1987 to May 24, 2008. In 2018, the series returned on Fox with Steve Harvey hosting. Filmed at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem, the show features live performances from both professional and up-and-coming artists, and also features the Amateur Night competition. In many cities such as New York (where it aired on WNBC), it often aired after ''Saturday Night Live'' during the late Saturday night/early Sunday morning hours, and was often paired with the similarly-syndicated ''Soul Train''. The Grind (TV Series)
''The Grind'' was a dance music show broadcast on the cable television station MTV between 1992 and 1997. It replaced '' Club MTV'', and featured people dancing to music tracks in a studio, linked by various hosts, including Eric Nies (fresh from '' The Real World: New York'') and DJ Jackie Christie. While ''Club MTV'' was mostly Dance, House and Freestyle, ''The Grind'' featured Hip-Hop and Rap with an occasional Dance hit. The show spawned a number of aerobics and workout videotapes. When MTV moved to its current location at 1515 Broadway, they lost the studio where ''Club MTV'' and ''The Grind'' were originally taped and episodes were taped on the roof of the building. The new space was small and inclement weather prevented taping. Noise ordinances prevented playing loud music while taping outdoors, so the show had to be taped without music and dubbed in later. Jérémie Mondon, known by his stage name Demon, is a French electronic music producer, born in 1977 in Paris. His music comes under the genre known as French touch. Music career The start of Demon's career was particularly influenced by the hip hop movement and artists such as Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Mobb Deep and A Tribe Called Quest. These artists heavily influenced his first recordings and he still has close ties to rap music, as he produces music for French rappers. Richard Martin Lloyd Walters (born January 14, 1965), better known as Slick Rick, is an English-American rapper and record producer. He rose to prominence with Doug E. Fresh & the Get Fresh Crew in the mid-1980s. Their songs " The Show" and " La Di Da Di" are considered early hip hop classics. "La Di Da Di" is one of the most sampled songs in history. "La Di Da Di" is a song performed by Doug E. Fresh, who provides the beatboxed instrumental, and MC Ricky D (later known as Slick Rick), who performs the vocals. It was originally released in 1985 as the B-side to " The Show". The song has since gained a reputation as an early hip hop classic, and it is one of the most sampled songs in history. Minnie Julia Riperton Rudolph (November 8, 1947 – July 12, 1979) was an American singer-songwriter best known for her 1975 single "Lovin' You" and her four octave D3 to F7 coloratura soprano range. She is also widely known for her use of the whistle register and has been referred to by the media as the "Queen of the Whistle Register." Born in 1947, Riperton grew up in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side. As a child, she studied music, drama and dance at Chicago's Abraham Lincoln Center. In her teen years, she sang lead vocals for the Chicago-based girl group the Gems.
