The Playa Bristol is a beach in Mar del Plata, Argentina, named after the Bristol Hotel. At one time it was highly fashionable, drawing the elite of Buenos Aires for vacations. Early years (to 1940s) In the mid-19th century the beach was the location of a small port. The rancher Patricio Peralta Ramos created the first settlement by the sea. The railway arrived in 1886, bringing the first vacationers. At first the hotels were simple, until the luxurious 3-story Bristol Hotel was built, occupying three blocks. The Bristol opened in 1888, and was patronised by wealthy families of Buenos Aires and other parts of the country who would come to bathe in the sea. Many of the leading citizens of Buenos Aires came to the opening of the Hotel Bristol by overnight train. Mar Del Plata
Mar del Plata is a city on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. It is the seat of General Pueyrredón district. Mar del Plata is the second largest city in Buenos Aires Province. The name "Mar del Plata" is a shortening of "Mar del Rio de la Plata," and has the meaning of "sea of the Rio de la Plata basin" or "adjoining sea to the (River) Plate region". Hotel Bristol, Mar Del Plata
The Bristol Hotel (often called the Hotel Bristol) was a luxury hotel in Mar del Plata, Argentina. At one time it was patronised by the elite of Buenos Aires. Later it became run down, and in 1944 it was sold, subdivided and rented the premises for commercial use. The hotel building was torn down in 1974. The name survives in the Playa Bristol, the most popular beach in Mar del Plata. Background The Basque immigrant Pedro Luro (1820–90) was responsible for development of Mar del Plata, a village founded in 1874. He had made his fortune in ranching, and envisioned developing the village as a port for shipping hides, meat, wool and grain to Buenos Aires. False Killer Whale
The false killer whale (''Pseudorca crassidens'') is a species of oceanic dolphin that is the only extant representative of the genus ''Pseudorca''. It is found in oceans worldwide but mainly in tropical regions. It was first described in 1846 as a species of porpoise based on a skull, which was revised when the first carcasses were observed in 1861. The name "false killer whale" comes from having a skull similar to the orca (''Orcinus orca''), or killer whale. The false killer whale reaches a maximum length of , though size can vary around the world. It is highly sociable, known to form pods of up to 50 members, and can also form pods with other dolphin species, such as the common bottlenose dolphin (''Tursiops truncatus''). Casino Central
The Casino Central ("Central Casino") is located in Mar del Plata, Argentina, and is one of the largest such establishments in the country. Overview The Central Casino is one of a pair of twin buildings designed by architect Alejandro Bustillo. Inspired by seafront Hôtel du Palais in Biarritz, France, the casino and neighboring Grand Provincial Hotel (inaugurated in 1950) remain architectural landmarks of the city of Mar del Plata as well as of Argentina. Its decoration was designed by famed French designer Jean-Michel Frank (who was in Argentina at work on the Llao Llao Hotel) together with local interior design house Casa Comte.
