Platy is a common name of freshwater fish in the genus ''Xiphophorus'' that lacks a "sword" at the bottom of their tails. Both species are livebearers, similar to other fish of the family Poeciliidae, such as the guppy and molly. Platies are native to the east coast of Central America and southern Mexico. The two species, the southern platyfish and the variatus platy, have been interbred to the point where they are difficult to distinguish. The variable platyfish (''Xiphophorus variatus''), also known as variatus platy or variegated platy, is a species of freshwater fish in family Poecilidae of order Cyprinodontiformes. A live-bearer, it is native to southern Tamaulipas and northern Veracruz states in northeastern Mexico. It is a popular fish in the aquarium trade due to its prolific breeding, as are hybrids with other members of its genus, most notably the southern platyfish. Description The variable platyfish grows to a maximum overall length of 7.0 cm (2.8 in). In the wild, they are olive in colour with black marbling or spots on the side of the caudal peduncle. Large males show blackish blotches on the dorsal fin. Unlike some other members of the genus, ''X. variatus'' has no claw at the tip of the fifth anal fin ray. Platy, Imathia
Platy ( el, Πλατύ) is a town and a municipality in eastern Imathia, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Alexandreia, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 181.375 km2. History Platy was founded in 1924 by Greek refugees from Turkey after the Asia Minor Catastrophe. They came from the villages of the Farassa area in Cappadocia (today the village in Turkey is called Çamlıca (Faraşa) in Yahyalı Province of Kayseri). After many stops on their journey, their final destination was Platy. Before Platy was founded, there was a small village strategically near a railway station.
