Plastic Dog (also known as Park Street Associates) was a company formed in Bristol by people affiliated with the music venues Dugout on Park Row and later the Granary nightclub. Formed by musicians, the group aimed to use their creative talents to create a bustling musical network in Bristol. History Al Read and Terry Brace were school friends who had experience playing music (Read guitar and Brace bass). Al had organised Skiffle nights at the Beeches club in Filton, Bristol in the late 50s. In 1966 When Read joined a band called the Franklyn Big Six, he sent a letter to Brace inviting him to join the band. They soon left this band to join Picture of Dorian Gray, which became renamed East Of Eden. Geoff Nicholson soon joined East of Eden and Ed Newshom, the roadie from Nicholson's last band The Kingbees followed. Granary Nightclub
The Granary, also known as Wait and James' Granary, is a building on Welsh Back in the English city of Bristol. It was designed by Archibald Ponton and William Venn Gough in red Cattybrook brick, with black and white brick and limestone dressings. It is probably the best preserved example of the Bristol Byzantine style and is designated by English Heritage as a grade II* listed building. The building was built in 1869 as a granary for Wait, James and Co. It was used to dry large quantities of grain, so it had to be strong, stable and warm, with good ventilation. Between 1968 and 1988, it housed a nightclub, also known as The Granary. In 2002, the building was converted into apartments, after the owners, Bristol City Council, had invited competitive bids from developers for its renovation and conversion. East of Eden were a British progressive rock band, who had a Top 10 hit in the UK with the single " Jig-a-Jig" in 1970. The track was stylistically unlike any of their other work. Although some might consider them a symphonic progressive band, others state that their style is mostly jazz-oriented. "King Of Siam" is the debut single by East of Eden, released on 25 July 1968 on the 7" 45 rpm vinyl record format. It was written by Dave Arbus. The band's then vocalist guitarist Al Read believes they were the first British band to be signed to the Atlantic label. The song isn't featured on any official compilations but appears on the unofficial Kings Of Siam - Rare Tracks (1968-1970) album released in 2013 on the French label Verne Records. Portbury
Portbury is a village and civil parish in Somerset, England within the unitary authority of North Somerset. The parish includes the hamlet of Sheepway which is situated on the moorland at the northern edge of the Gordano valley, between the Gordano services on the M5 motorway and Portishead, near the Royal Portbury Dock. The parish has a population of 827. History The Romans are known to have had a wharf or hard at Portbury, probably for shipbuilding, as the commander of the logistics port of Ad Sabrinam at Seamills was charged with supplying ships to carry troops and supplies to the legions across the Severn in South Wales. It was used for the export of lead and tin from mines on the Mendip Hills. Sheepway (Old English ''schip weg'') - the port of Portbury - was probably in use in later, Saxon, times. Jasper Carrott
Robert Norman Davis (born 14 March 1945), best known by his stage name, Jasper Carrott, is an English comedian, actor and television presenter. Early life Born in Shaftmoor Lane, Acocks Green, in Birmingham, Carrott was educated at Acocks Green Primary School and Moseley Grammar School. He worked as a trainee buyer at a city centre department store, the Beehive, with schoolmate Bev Bevan. He acquired the nickname Jasper aged nine, and added the surname Carrott when he was 17. Career In February 1969 he started his own folk club, "The Boggery", in nearby Solihull with his friend Les Ward. Carrott performed folk songs and as an MC. His banter overtook the songs and he became more a comedian than a singer. Queen Square, Bristol
Queen Square is a Georgian square in the centre of Bristol, England. Following the 1831 riot, Queen Square declined through the latter part of the 19th century, was threatened with a main line railway station, but then bisected by a dual carriageway in the 1930s. By 1991 20,000 vehicles including scheduled buses were crossing the square every day, and over 30% of the buildings around it were vacant. In 1999, a successful bid for National Lottery funding allowed Queen Square to be restored to its approximate 1817 layout. The buses were diverted, the dual carriageway was removed, forecourts and railings were restored, and Queen Square re-emerged as a magnificent public space surrounded by high quality commercial accommodation. Rodney Matthews
Rodney Matthews (born 6 July 1945) is a British illustrator and conceptual designer of fantasy and science-fiction. Career Trained at the West of England College of Art, Matthews worked in advertising for Plastic Dog Graphics before turning freelance in 1970, initially under the name Skyline Studios. Matthews has painted over 140 subjects for record album covers, for many rock and progressive rock bands. More than 90 of his pictures have been published worldwide, selling in poster format, as well as many international editions of calendars, jigsaw puzzles, postcards, notecards, snowboards and T-shirts. His originals have been exhibited throughout the UK and Europe. New Wave Of British Heavy Metal
The new wave of British heavy metal (commonly abbreviated as NWOBHM) was a nationwide musical movement that started in England in the mid-1970s and achieved international attention by the early 1980s. Journalist Geoff Barton coined the term in a May 1979 issue of the British music newspaper ''Sounds'' to describe the emergence of new heavy metal bands in the mid to late 1970s, during the period of punk rock's decline and the dominance of new wave music. Although encompassing diverse mainstream and underground styles, the music of the NWOBHM is best remembered for drawing on the heavy metal of the 1970s and infusing it with the intensity of punk rock to produce fast and aggressive songs.
