Plasmodium Brodeni
''Plasmodium brodeni'' is a parasite of the genus ''Plasmodium'' subgenus '' Vinckeia''. As in all ''Plasmodium'' species, ''P. brodeni'' has both vertebrate and insect hosts. The vertebrate hosts for this parasite are mammals. Taxonomy The parasite was first described by Rodhain ''at al.'' in 1913. Distribution This species is found in the Congo, Sudan and probably in other parts of Africa. Hosts The only known host is the elephant shrew ('' Petrodomus'' and ''Elephantulus ''Elephantulus'' is a genus of elephant shrew in the family Macroscelididae. Plasmodium
''Plasmodium'' is a genus of unicellular eukaryotes that are obligate parasites of vertebrates and insects. The life cycles of ''Plasmodium'' species involve development in a blood-feeding insect host which then injects parasites into a vertebrate host during a blood meal. Parasites grow within a vertebrate body tissue (often the liver) before entering the bloodstream to infect red blood cells. The ensuing destruction of host red blood cells can result in malaria. During this infection, some parasites are picked up by a blood-feeding insect (mosquitoes in majority cases), continuing the life cycle. Vinckeia
''Vinckeia'' is a subgenus of the genus ''Plasmodium'' — all of which are parasitic alveolates. The subgenus ''Vinckeia'' was created by Cyril Garnham in 1964 to accommodate the mammalian parasites other than those infecting the primates. Diagnostic features Species in this subgenus infect mammals other than the higher primates. Species infecting lemurs have since been included in this subgenus. This classification may not be correct. Elephant Shrew
Elephant shrews, also called jumping shrews or sengis, are small insectivorous mammals native to Africa, belonging to the family Macroscelididae, in the order Macroscelidea. Their traditional common English name "elephant shrew" comes from a perceived resemblance between their long noses and the trunk of an elephant, and their superficial similarity with shrews (family Soricidae) in the order Eulipotyphla.
