Plant City, Arcadia, And Gulf Railroad
The Plant City, Arcadia, and Gulf Railroad was a railroad line that once operated from Plant City, Florida, south to Welcome, a distance of about 13 miles. The line remains in service today and is owned by CSX Transportation, which it operates as their Plant City Subdivision. History The Plant City, Arcadia, and Gulf Railroad was first built as a logging railroad in 1898 by the Warnell Lumber & Veneer Company. It connected to the Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad in Plant City, which would become the main line of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad in 1900. The Seaboard Air Line bought the Plant City, Arcadia, and Gulf Railroad in 1905 and rebuilt it. The line notably served Coronet Industries phosphate processing plant. Seaboard would also build a line from just south of Keysville (at a point which would then be known as Welcome Junction) east to Mulberry and Bartow in 1912. The Bone Valley is a region of central Florida, encompassing portions of present-day Hardee, Hillsborough, Manatee, and Polk counties, in which phosphate is mined for use in the production of agricultural fertilizer. Florida currently contains the largest known deposits of phosphate in the United States. The matrix contains a number of chemical impurities, including naturally occurring uranium at concentrations of approximately 100 ppm. Hopewell is an unincorporated community in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. It lies at an elevation of above sea level. Hopewell is located along Florida State Road 60 at the intersection of Hillsborough County Road 39 and southern terminus of Florida State Road 39. History On May 14, 1883, George W. Wells established the Callsville post office. The population in 1883 was 200. In 1870, the Hopewell Baptist Church was built by early residents, and named after Hopewell, Alabama. It runs along CSX's A Line from just west of Lakeland, Florida, Lakeland and heads west through Plant City, Florida, Plant City to the community of Mango, Florida, Mango in Hillsborough County, Florida, Hillsborough County, just east of Tampa, Florida, Tampa.
