Fort Payne, Alabama
Fort Payne is a city in and county seat of DeKalb County, in northeastern Alabama, United States. It is near Lookout Mountain. At the 2020 census, the population was 14,877. This city developed around a fort of the same name, built in the 1830s to intern the Cherokee tribe who were being rounded up by the military before being forcibly removed to Indian Territory in 1838 on what they called the Trail of Tears. European-American settlers gradually developed a community around the former fort. It grew rapidly in the late 19th century based on industrial resources, and manufacturing increased in the early 20th century. Rainsville is a city in DeKalb County, Alabama, United States. At the 2010 census the population was 4,948, up from 4,499 in 2000. Rainsville is located on top of Sand Mountain, a southern extension of the Cumberland Plateau. History Rainsville was incorporated in October 1956. An EF5 tornado struck the city on April 27, 2011, leaving 25 fatalities. It initially touched down to the southwest in Lakeview, causing structural damage to small buildings and snapping trees. It grew in intensity, and the path width increased from around fifty yards to a half a mile, as the rotation entered the Rainsville and Sylvania communities. Damage included houses that were completely removed from foundations and debris scattered for about one mile, trees debarked, and a few mobile homes were destroyed with debris strewn for about a mile downstream. Ider High School is a Pre-K–12 school located in Ider, Alabama, United States. It is part of the DeKalb County School System. History The Morona School was the first school located in Ider, AL. This school was a log cabin constructed in 1890. In the school's first year it had and enrollment of 22 students. In 1907 construction of a new two-story structure began. At that time the school was renamed Ider School. Due to increasing demand from the community, a new school building was constructed in 1932. This school was sometimes referred to as the Rock School because the building was constructed out of stone. By 1939, Ider School was accredited and offered its students twelve grades of education.
