Plain Sailing (song)
"Plain Sailing" is the debut solo single by English singer-songwriter Tracey Thorn. Overview The original version appeared on Thorn's first solo album '' A Distant Shore'' in 1982. It was re-recorded and released as Thorn's first single on 7" vinyl later that year. The B-side "Goodbye Joe" is a cover version of a song by fellow Cherry Red Records recording artists Monochrome Set. The re-recorded version of "Plain Sailing" was included on the Cherry Red ''Pillows & Prayers'' compilation album. The single sleeve featured the Robert Doisneau photograph ''Le baiser de l'hôtel de ville (Kiss by the Hôtel de Ville)'' and hand-lettering by Thorn herself. Thorn did not release another solo single until " It's All True" 25 years later. Tracey Thorn
Tracey Anne Thorn (born 26 September 1962) is a British singer. She is best known as being one half of the duo Everything but the Girl from 1982 to 1999. She was a member of the band Marine Girls between 1980 and 1983 and since 2007 has been active as a solo artist. Early life The youngest of three children, Thorn was born in Brookmans Park, Hertfordshire. She grew up in nearby Hatfield and studied English at the University of Hull, where she graduated in 1984 with First Class Honours. She later took an MA degree at Birkbeck, University of London. Music career Stern Bops (1979–1980) Thorn began her musical career in the punk-pop hybrid group Stern Bops playing guitar and providing some vocal backing. Marine Girls (1980–1983) Thorn then formed Marine Girls as primary songwriter, playing guitar and sharing vocals. ''A Distant Shore'' is the first studio album by Tracey Thorn, released via Cherry Red Records in 1982. It includes a cover version of The Velvet Underground's " Femme Fatale". Recorded for just £138, the album reached number 1 in the UK Indie Chart in 1983. In 2010, it was awarded a gold certification from the Independent Music Companies Association, which indicated sales of at least 100,000 copies throughout Europe. Cherry Red Records is a British independent record label founded in Malvern, Worcestershire by Iain McNay in 1978. "It's All True" is the first single from singer Tracey Thorn's solo album, ''Out of the Woods (Tracey Thorn album), Out of the Woods'', released in February 2007. Recording and release "It's All True" is one of seven songs on the album all produced by Ewan Pearson. The Monochrome Set are an English post-punk/ new wave band, originally formed in London in January 1978. The most recent line-up consists of Bid, Andy Warren, Athen Ayren and Stephen Gilchrist. History Original band: 1978–1985 The Monochrome Set was formed in London in 1978 from the remnants of a college group called The B-Sides, whose members had included Stuart Goddard, later known as Adam Ant. Their first live gig was on 15 Feb 1978, at Westfield College in London. ''Pillows & Prayers'' (subtitled ''Cherry Red 1982-1983'') is a compilation album released Christmas 1982, featuring artists on the Cherry Red record label. The record was originally sold at 99 pence (in fact, "pay no more than 99p" was printed on the original sleeve), which helped ensure that the album peaked and remained at number 1 on the UK Indie Chart for five weeks and sold over 120,000 copies. In 2007 the album was repackaged as a 3-CD plus DVD box set featuring complementary tracks from the same period and an extended essay by Alex Ogg. This revised edition won the 2008 MOJO Award for Catalogue Release of the Year, with three of the key artists, Martyn Bates ( Eyeless in Gaza), Lawrence (Felt) and Bid (The Monochrome Set) appearing on stage to collect the award, alongside Cherry Red founder Iain McNay. Robert Doisneau
Robert Doisneau (; 14 April 1912 – 1 April 1994) was a French photographer. From the 1930s, he photographed the streets of Paris. He was a champion of humanist photography and with Henri Cartier-Bresson a pioneer of photojournalism. Doisneau is known for his 1950 image ''Le baiser de l'hôtel de ville'' (''The Kiss by the City Hall''), a photograph of a couple kissing on a busy Parisian street. He was appointed a ''Chevalier'' (Knight) of the Legion of Honour in 1984 by then French president, François Mitterrand.
