Ferdinand Karsch
Ferdinand Anton Franz Karsch or Karsch-Haack (2 September 1853, in Münster – 20 December 1936, in Berlin) was a German arachnologist, entomologist and anthropologist. The son of a doctor, Karsch was educated at the Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin and published a thesis on the gall wasp in 1877. From 1878 to 1921 he held the post of curator at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin. Between 1873 and 1893, he published a catalogue of the spiders of Westphalia; he also published numerous articles on the specimens that the museum received from various explorers and naturalists working in Africa, in China, in Japan, in Australia, etc. This publication of others' work sometimes led to disputes over priority and nomenclature, for example with Pickard-Cambridge. Alongside his zoological activities, he published many works on sexuality and, in particular, homosexuality in both the animal kingdom and in so-called "primitive" peoples, including ''Das gleichgeschlechtliche Leben ...

Thericleidae
The Thericleidae are a family of grasshoppers within the Order (biology), order Orthoptera and superfamily Eumastacoidea. They have exceptionally stubby antennae even for the Caelifera, with most species have a characteristic "horse-headed" look in profile. The family occurs in Africa, most members living in small trees and shrubs rather than forbs or grasses. The type genus is ''Thericles'' Stål, 1875. They are obscure insects, not well known to the public, but nonetheless have a few common names, including "monkey grasshoppers", whether because of the head shape, or because they are very agile in leaping about among the twigs of the trees they inhabit, is not clear. They also are called "bush hoppers", a name they share with the closely related Euschmidtiidae. Subfamilies and selected Genera * Afromastacinae Descamps, 1977 ** ''Afromastax'' Descamps, 1977 ** ''Clerithes'' Bolívar, 1914 * Barythericleinae Descamps, 1977 (monotypic) ** ''Barythericles'' Descamps, 1977 * Chrom ...

Orthoptera
Orthoptera () is an order of insects that comprises the grasshoppers, locusts, and crickets, including closely related insects, such as the bush crickets or katydids and wētā. The order is subdivided into two suborders: Caelifera – grasshoppers, locusts, and close relatives; and Ensifera – crickets and close relatives. More than 20,000 species are distributed worldwide. The insects in the order have incomplete metamorphosis, and produce sound (known as a "stridulation") by rubbing their wings against each other or their legs, the wings or legs containing rows of corrugated bumps. The tympanum, or ear, is located in the front tibia in crickets, mole crickets, and bush crickets or katydids, and on the first abdominal segment in the grasshoppers and locusts. These organisms use vibrations to locate other individuals. Grasshoppers and other orthopterans are able to fold their wings (i.e. they are members of Neoptera). Etymology The name is derived from the Greek ὀρθό ...

Plagiotriptus Pinivorus
''Plagiotriptus pinivorus'', the African pine-feeding grasshopper, is a species of thericleid orthopteran. It is native to eastern Africa where it is usually found in areas with moderate or heavy rainfall, mostly in the range , but sometimes at lower elevations down to about . Description The adult male is laterally compressed and about long. It has very short antennae, and a large, shield-like pronotum which conceals tiny, vestigial wings. The femora are well-developed and the abdomen sharply upturned. The female is double the size of the male, broader and more heavily-built, and also has small, non-functional wings. Both sexes have yellow eyes and are mainly light green, the male having inconspicuous specks of red, pink, white and blue on various appendages while the female has yellow ovipositor valves. Ecology ''Plagiotriptus pinivorus'' is highly polyphagous, feeding on a wide range of evergreen and semi-evergreen trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants. In Malawi in the 1960s ...
