Placedo, Texas
Placedo is a census-designated place (CDP) in Victoria County, Texas, United States. This was a new CDP for the 2010 census with a population of 692. It is part of the Victoria, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. Geography Placedo is located at (28.691936, -96.825904). It is situated along U.S. Highway 87 in southeastern Victoria County, approximately 14 miles southeast of Victoria. The CDP has a total area of , all land. History A settlement has existed at the site since the Republic of Texas era. The community is named for Plácido Benavides, a participant and organizer of volunteer troops in the Texas Revolution, and an early settler who established a ranch in the area during the 1830s. The San Antonio and Mexican Gulf Railroad established a station at Placedo in 1860. In 1906, the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway crossed the old line and renamed the station Placedo Junction. The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts is an executive branch position created by the Texas Constitution. John Sharp (Texas Politician)
John Spencer Sharp (born July 28, 1950) is an American Democratic politician from Texas, who has served since 2011 as the chancellor of the Texas A&M University System. From 1991 to 1999, he was the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. From 1979 to 1987, he was a member of both houses of the Texas State Legislature. From 1987 to 1991, he was one of the three members of the Texas Railroad Commission. In 1998 and 2002, he was the Democratic Party's nominee for Lieutenant Governor of Texas. Sharp is also a principal in the Austin office of the Dallas-based Ryan & Company, a tax consulting firm. In 2005, he was appointed to serve as chairman of the Texas Tax Reform Commission. San Antonio And Mexican Gulf Railroad
The San Antonio and Mexican Gulf Railroad (SA&MG) was a railroad set up in 1850 to connect the city of San Antonio, Texas, San Antonio to the Gulf of Mexico. The railroad survived the American Civil War, Civil War and merged with the Indianola Railroad into the Gulf, Western Texas and Pacific Railway in 1871. History of the road The SA&MG was chartered on September 5, 1850, with plans to connect Lavaca, Texas, later changed to Port Lavaca, Texas to San Antonio. Trackwork began in 1856, and a line was completed to Victoria, Texas in April, 1861, when the Civil War broke out. Among the founders of the railroad were German-born railroad engineer Gustav Schleicher and Joseph E. Plácido Benavides
Plácido Benavides (1810–1837) was an early Mexican-born settler in De Leon's Colony, Victoria County, Texas. Benavides earned himself the sobriquet of the Paul Revere of Texas for his 1836 journey from San Patricio to Goliad to Victoria, warning residents of the approaching Mexican army. He was twice elected alcalde of Victoria, Texas. He married into the powerful De León family, and with his wife Agustina became the father of three daughters. Benavides fought against the dictatorship of Antonio López de Santa Anna, but did not feel Texas should be separated from Mexico. He led a unit of Tejano fighters at the Battle of Goliad, and then he proceeded with his company to San Antonio, where they fought against Martín Perfecto de Cos in the Siege of Bexar. The Victoria Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of three counties in the Coastal Bend region of Texas, anchored by the city of Victoria.
