The Place Vendôme (), earlier known as Place Louis-le-Grand, and also as Place Internationale, is a square in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, France, located to the north of the Tuileries Gardens and east of the Église de la Madeleine. It is the starting point of the Rue de la Paix. Its regular architecture by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and pedimented screens canted across the corners give the rectangular Place Vendôme the aspect of an octagon. The original Vendôme Column at the centre of the square was erected by Napoleon I to commemorate the Battle of Austerlitz; it was torn down on 16 May 1871, by decree of the Paris Commune, but subsequently re-erected and remains a prominent feature on the square today. ''Place Vendôme'' is a 1998 French crime drama film directed by Nicole Garcia, starring Catherine Deneuve, and named after the Place Vendôme in Paris. Deneuve won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the 55th Venice International Film Festival for her role in the film. Plot Vincent Malivert is the head of a prestigious jewel broker's firm on the exclusive Place Vendôme. Hampered by debt and implicated in trafficking of stolen jewels, he commits suicide, leaving his wife Marianne to pick up the pieces. Marianne, who has spent the last few years in and out of a clinic recovering from alcoholism, discovers a set of perfect cut diamonds in her husband's safe. Although she knows the diamonds are probably stolen, she decides to use this opportunity to rebuild her life and sets about trying to find a buyer for the hidden jewels. Place Vendome is a German melodic hard rock / AOR project, founded in 2004 at the direction of Frontiers Records president Serafino Perugino. Place Vendome was formed by Helloween and Unisonic vocalist Michael Kiske, Dennis Ward (bass and production), Kosta Zafiriou (drums) and Uwe Reitenauer (guitars) from the band Pink Cream 69 and Gunther Werno (keyboards) from the band Vanden Plas. The project has released four full-length albums; '' Place Vendome'' in 2005, '' Streets of Fire'' in 2009, '' Thunder in the Distance'' in 2013 and '' Close to the Sun'' in 2017. History Debut album (2004–2005) Serafino Perugino devised the idea for the Place Vendome project during the winter of 2004. ''Place Vendome'' is the debut album of the hard rock project Place Vendome. The songwriting for this album was provided by Dennis Ward (Pink Cream 69), with further contributions from David Readman and Alfred Koffler. The album received very positive reviews and was hailed as vocalist's Michael Kiske's glorious return to a heavier rock sound, since his exit from the German power metal band Helloween in 1993. It was released on 10 October 2005 with cover art credited to Carl André Beckston.
