Pizzey Memorial Clock
Pizzey Memorial Clock is a heritage-listed memorial originally located at 63 Churchill Street, Childers, Bundaberg Region, Queensland, Australia. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 August 1992 but was removed from the register in June 2015 after it was reconstructed at the Childers Historical Village. History The memorial clock commemorated Jack Pizzey, who was Premier of Queensland from 17 January 1968 until his death on 31 July that same year. Pizzey was born in Childers and was the Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly for the local seat of Isis. In 2000–2001, the Isis Shire Council decided to redevelop that section of Churchill Street to create the Millennium Park which would include a monument to the Kanaka workers as its feature. Childers is a rural town and locality in the Bundaberg Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Childers had a population of 1,584 people. Geography Childers is in the Wide Bay-Burnett region of Queensland, Australia, situated on the Bruce Highway and lies north of the state capital Brisbane and south-west of Bundaberg. The Isis Highway runs south from the Bruce Highway in Childers. The township is set on a ridge overlooking fields of rich volcanic soil. The Bundaberg Region is a local government area in the Wide Bay–Burnett region of Queensland, Australia, about north of Brisbane, the state capital. The Queensland Heritage Register is a heritage register, a statutory list of places in Queensland, Australia that are protected by Queensland legislation, the Queensland Heritage Act 1992. It is maintained by the Queensland Heritage Council. As at 5 April 2020 there are 1790 places on the Queensland Heritage Register, including the Story Bridge in Brisbane and the Ross River Meatworks Chimney in Townsville. Jack Pizzey
Jack Charles Allan Pizzey (2 February 1911 – 31 July 1968) was a Queensland Country Party politician. He was Premier of Queensland, in a coalition with the Liberal Party, from 17 January 1968 until his death on 31 July that year. To date, he is the most recent premier of an Australian state to die in office. Early life and sporting career Pizzey was born in Childers, Queensland in 1911 to John Thomas Pizzey and his second wife Ellen Elliott (née Brand). The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Electoral District Of Isis
Isis was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland, from 1932 until 1992. It was named after the Shire of Isis in the Wide Bay–Burnett region. Isis was created in the 1931 redistribution under the Moore government, replacing the former district of Burrum. It primarily comprised the area between Bundaberg and Maryborough, not including the cities themselves. Isis was primarily a safe seat for the Country party. Premier Jack Pizzey was the member for Isis from 1950 until his sudden death in 1968. The seat was then won by Labor in the resulting by-election. Isis was abolished in the 1991 redistribution under the Goss government, being replaced by the new district of Hervey Bay. The Shire of Isis was a local government area located in the Wide Bay–Burnett region of Queensland, Australia, to the south of Bundaberg. The Shire, administered from the town of Childers covered an area of , and existed as a local government entity from 1887 until 2008, when it was amalgamated with the City of Bundaberg and the Shires of Burnett and Kolan to form the Bundaberg Region. Kanaka (Pacific Island Worker)
Kanakas were workers (a mix of voluntary and involuntary) from various Pacific Islands employed in British colonies, such as British Columbia (Canada), Fiji, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and Queensland (Australia) in the 19th and early 20th centuries. They also worked in California (USA) and Chile (see Easter Island and Rapanui people as related subjects).
