Pittwater State By-election, 1986
A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly seat of Pittwater on 31 May 1986. It was triggered by the resignation of sitting Liberal MP Max Smith. The by-election was won by Liberal candidate Jim Longley. Background Labor did not stand a candidate in the by-election, and as a result, this election was almost won by professional surfer and former world surfing champion Nat Young, who ran on a largely environmental ticket. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. From the creation of the assembly up to about 1990, the post-nominals "MLA" (Member of the Legislative Assembly) were used. Liberal Party Of Australia (New South Wales Division)
The Liberal Party of Australia (New South Wales Division), commonly known as the New South Wales Liberals, is the state division of the Liberal Party of Australia in New South Wales. The party currently governs in New South Wales in coalition with the National Party of Australia (NSW). The party is part of the federal Liberal Party which is in opposition nationally. Following the Liberal Party's formation in October 1944, the NSW division of the Liberal Party was formed in January 1945. For the following months, the Democratic Party and Liberal Democratic Party joined the Liberal Party and were replaced by the new party's NSW division. In the 74 years since its foundation the party has won eight state elections to the Labor Party's 13, and has spent 27 years in office (1965 to 1976, 1988 to 1995 and 2011 to the present) to Labor's 46. Max Smith
Richard Max Smith (22 February 1930 – 8 November 2020) was an Australian politician. He represented Pittwater in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1978 to 1986, first as a member of the Liberal Party and then as an independent. Smith was born in Gladesville to John Voyle Smith and Doris Ethel Cullen. He was educated at Parramatta High School and then the University of Sydney, and was selected as the youngest member sent to the Duke of Edinburgh's 1956 study conference at Oxford. He became a miner and colliery manager. He worked for Australian Iron and Steel from 1951 to 1962 and was superintendent of Rio Tinto from 1962 to 1967, subsequently serving as consultant mining engineer until 1974. From 1974 to 1978 he was technical and operations director of Coalex. He married Helen on 3 October 1953 and had three children; he subsequently married Sandra Simpson on 28 April 1984, and Janet Lawrence on 15 March 1998. Jim Longley
James Alan Longley (born 28 July 1958) is a former Australian politician and banking executive. As a member of the Liberal Party, he served as the Member of Parliament for Pittwater in the Legislative Assembly of New South Wales (NSW) from 1986 to 1996. During his tenure in the Assembly, he was Minister for Community Services, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, and Minister for the Ageing. Education and personal life Longley was born in Sydney, New South Wales (NSW), and attended Mona Vale Primary School, Sydney Grammar Preparatory School, Narrabeen High School, and St Andrew's Cathedral School. He received his Bachelor of Economics from the University of Sydney, a Master's degree from Macquarie University, and also attended the University of Washington in the United States. Nat Young
Robert Harold "Nat" Young (born 14 November 1947) is an Australian surfer and author. Surfing career Born in Sydney, New South Wales, Young grew up in the small coastal suburb of Collaroy. In 1964, he was runner-up in the Australian junior championship at Manly, and two years later was named world surfing champion in 1966. He won the title again (then called the Smirnoff World Pro/Am) in 1970. Young won three Australian titles in 1966, 1967 and 1969, and won the Bells Beach Surf Classic three times. Young featured in a number of important surf films of 1960s and 1970s including the classic 1973 surf movie ''Crystal Voyager'' and he also had a featured role as surfer Nick Naylor in the 1979 Australian drama film '' Palm Beach''.
