The siege of Coruña, also known as the defence of Corunna, was a series of military encounters between the English Armada and the defenders of the fishermen's city of Coruña in Galicia (Spain), Galicia that lasted for two weeks in May 1589. The siege was the first interaction between the English Armada, a revenge English expedition within the Anglo-Spanish War (1585–1604), Anglo-Spanish war, and the Spanish troops, and set the tone for the rest of the campaign. The siege ended in failure, and the English moved on to besiege Lisbon. Background The English Armada was considerably larger than the 137-ship-strong Spanish Armada. Pita Maile (born 30 May 1990) is a Tongan rugby league footballer who plays as a , or on the . He previously played for the Melbourne Storm in the NRL Under-20s and was a part of their 2009 Grand Final winning team. He is a Tongan international. Playing career Maile originally played junior representative rugby league with the Parramatta Eels, playing in the S.G. Ball Cup with the Eels in 2008. Sir Pita Lus (16 September 1935 – 1 October 2021) was an outspoken Papua New Guinean politician who played an important role in the country's independence in 1975 and is credited with having persuaded Michael Somare, the country's first prime minister, to run for parliament. Early life Pita Lus was born on 16 September 1935 in Lehinga (or Lahinga) village in the Maprik District of what is now the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG). He did not learn to read and write until he was 24. His father died in prison in Rabaul after being convicted of the murder of a white labour recruiter who was trying to take away the brother of Lus. In 1949, he left home and went to Rabaul and, later, Kavieng in search of work on plantations, being employed as a cook and a labourer. A member of the House of Representatives, Pita is the leader of the Move Forward Party, the ''de facto'' successor to the dissolved Future Forward Party. Pita led Move Forward to become the largest party in the 2023 general election, winning 151 seats. He hoped to be elected prime minister of Thailand. Pita Elisara (November 16, 1976 – October 16, 2018) was an American football offensive lineman. A native of American Samoa, Elisara grew up playing rugby and football. After high school, he spent two years at Palomar College while living with some of his brothers, who were serving in the US Navy, in Oceanside, California. In 1998, he transferred to Indiana University, where he became an All-Big Ten offensive lineman. He started all 11 games in 1999 for the Hoosiers. Being not selected in the 2000 NFL Draft, Elisara was signed onto the New York Giants off-season roster, but eventually cut. He was then selected in the 2001 XFL Draft by the short-lived San Francisco Demons. The following years he spent on several NFL teams' off-season roster, while being assigned to NFL Europe squads during the season. Lieutenant Colonel Pita Driti is a former Fijian soldier who played a prominent role in the 2006 Fijian coup d'état. He served as the Land Force Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, the third most senior position in the Military. Driti was educated at Suva Grammar School. In the leadup to the coup, Driti accused the Australian government of infiltrating mercenaries into Fiji. He also demanded that Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase be investigated for attempting to remove RFMF commander Frank Bainimarama. In the aftermath of the coup he instigated a witch-hunt for critics of the military regime, who were rounded up and taken to the RFMF barracks in Suva, beaten and intimidated. He formerly played as a goalkeeper at the collegiate level for the Charleston Golden Eagles and the Marshall Thundering Herd.
