Pisagua is a Chilean port on the Pacific Ocean, located in Huara '' comuna'' (municipality), in Tarapacá Region, northern Chile. Early history According to Francisco Riso Patrón, and stated in ''Diccionario Geográfico de las Provincias de Tacna y Tarapacá'', the name Pisagua has a quechua origin, meaning "place of scarce water": ''Pis'' - scarce, ''agua'' - water. Pisagua was founded in 1611 after an edict by the Viceroy of Peru which established a base from which it could be possible to stem the illegal traffic of gold and silver flowing from the important mines of Potosí and Oruro, in the Highlands of the " Audiencia of Charcas", to the British and Dutch pirates operating in the Corregimiento de Arica. Pisagua Internment Camp
The Pisagua internment camp ( es, Campamento de Prisioneros de Pisagua) was a concentration camp in Pisagua, Chile. History An isolated location in northern Chile, Pisagua was used as a detention site for male homosexuals under the military dictatorship of General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo in 1927-1931. From 1943 to 1945, Pisagua became the site of wartime internment for citizens of enemy nations when Chile entered World War II on the Allied side. The complex was turned into a concentration camp for Chilean socialists, communists and anarchists under President Gabriel González Videla in 1947-1948. Chilean Army Captain Augusto Pinochet was appointed to run the Pisagua camp in January 1948. The Pisagua Case
The Pisagua Case is the name given to the legal actions taken surrounding the crimes that occurred in the torture center and prison camp installed in the town of Pisagua, during the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet in Chile. History The judicial investigation began prior to the claim of illegal burial presented by the Vicariate of Solidarity, 31 May 1990 in the Pozo Almonte Court. On 2 June 1990 the mass grave was found, located in the north-west sector of the Pisagua Cemetery. Twenty bodies were discovered within the grave, well-preserved due to the salt that permeates the sand in the area. BAP Pisagua (SS-33)
BAP ''Pisagua'' (SS-33) is one of two Type 209/1200 submarines ordered by the Peruvian Navy on 21 March 1977. It was built by the German shipbuilder '' Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft AG'' at its shipyard in Kiel. It is named after the battle of Pisagua which took place between Chilean warships and Peruvian coastal artillery on 2 November 1879. While undergoing sea trials in the North Sea, it collided with a Soviet ship on 8 April 1982 and suffered damage which delayed its commissioning.
