Piqua City School District
Piqua City Schools is a school district headquartered in Piqua, Ohio. The district includes Piqua, as well as most of Springcreek Township and Washington Township. History James Wisecup served as superintendent until 1975. That year, the board voted to remove him, with three voting in favor and two voting to retain him. Joel Walker, the editor of the ''Troy Daily News'', wrote that "The Wisecup-board feud has apparently been brewing for quite some time." In 2016 an alumnus of the school district, Dwayne Thompson, became the superintendent. Piqua ( ) is a city in Miami County, southwest Ohio, United States, 27 miles north of Dayton. The population was 20,522 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was founded as the village of Washington in 1807 by a soldier under Gen. Anthony Wayne. History Etymology The word 'Piqua' is believed to be derived from a Shawnee language phrase: ''Othath-He-Waugh-Pe-Qua,'' translated as "He has risen from the ashes," related to a legend of the people. It became associated with the ''Pekowi'', one of the five divisions of the Shawnee people, who were eventually known as the Piqua. The ''Miami Valley News'', formerly the Troy Daily News, is an American daily newspaper published every day except Mondays and Saturdays and holidays in Troy, Ohio. Piqua High School is a public high school in Piqua, Ohio, United States, and is the only high school in the Piqua City Schools district. The current high school was completed in 1981 and sits adjacent to Alexander Stadium, completed in 2001. The school's athletic teams are known as the Indians, and the school colors are red and blue.
