Pippi Longstocking (1961 Film)
"Pippi Longstocking" is the 15th episode of the second season of the American television series '' Shirley Temple's Storybook''. The episode was directed by Frank Bunetta and starring Gina Gillespie as Pippi Longstocking. It is based on the famous children's novel of the same name by Astrid Lindgren. Plot Susan Scholfield and her little sister are sent to bed by their parents. Susan is angry. She does not want to go to bed, because she is not tired. Susan also finds it stupid that her parents decide when she has to get up or go to school. She is constantly told to do things she absolutely does not feel like doing. Susan says that if she had it her way she would live in a big house with a monkey and a horse and a box full of gold. Then she would not be Susan any more, but Pippi Longstocking. ''Shirley Temple's Storybook'' is a 1958-1961 American children's anthology series hosted and narrated by actress Shirley Temple. The series features adaptations of fairy tales like Mother Goose and other family-oriented stories performed by well-known actors, although one episode, an adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's 1851 novel ''The House of the Seven Gables'', was meant for older youngsters. The first season of sixteen black-and-white and colored episodes aired on NBC between January 12, 1958 and December 21, 1958 as ''Shirley Temple's Storybook''. Thirteen episodes of the first season re-ran on ABC beginning on January 12, 1959. Renie Isabel Riano (August 7, 1899 – July 3, 1971) was an English-born American actress who, with the exception of the Jiggs and Maggie comedies, had minor roles in 1940s and 1950s films. She was sometimes credited as Reine Riano, Renee Riano, or Rene Riano. Karl Erik Tore Johansson (19 October 1902 or 1903; sources differ – 12 May 1971), better known by the stage name Tor Johnson, was a Swedish professional wrestler and actor. Bernard Kates (December 26, 1922 – February 2, 2010) was an American actor on television, in movies and on the stage. Serving as a bomber pilot during World War II, Kates earned an Air Medal with three clusters and a Distinguished Flying Cross. Gina Gail Gillespie (born September 20, 1951) is an American former child actress best known for her recurring roles in the television series ''Law of the Plainsman'' and ''Karen'', and for playing Pippi Longstocking in a 1961 episode of ''Shirley Temple's Storybook''. Frank Bunetta was an American television director and producer. Early years When Bunetta was 10 years old, he performed as "the Boy Without a Body" in the Sells Floto Circus. He later worked with TV developer Allen B. DuMont in an association that led to his career in video. Career Bunetta's TV career began when he was an employee at the DuMont Laboratories who worked at night at WABD-TV. In 1947, Bunetta was technical director of a TV adaptation of ''A Christmas Carol'' on the ''DuMont Television Network''. By April 1949, he had been promoted to production supervisor for Dumont TV. Bunetta directed Jackie Gleason in 1951 when Gleason was host of the variety show ''Cavalcade of Stars''. ''Pippi Longstocking'' ( sv, Pippi Långstrump) is a Swedish children's novel by writer Astrid Lindgren, published by Rabén & Sjögren with illustrations by Ingrid Vang Nyman in 1945. Translations have been published in more than 40 languages, commonly with new illustrations. The first English language translation was published late in 1950 by The Viking Press in the United States with illustrations by Louis S. Glanzman. Origin Lindgren originally told Pippi stories to her daughter Karin in 1941, when the seven-year-old was home sick with pneumonia. She wrote the first manuscript during her own injury three years later.
